The Golden Bachelorette surprises an assisted living community to celebrate the series premiere

2024-09-25

This retirement community got quite the surprise during their special "senior prom" celebration to ring in the series premiere of The Golden Bachelorette. Residents of The Bristal in Englewood, New Jersey, stepped into a glamorous prom-themed celebration, with golden dcor, festive snacks, bubbly drinks, branded serving ware, and trivia.

As they gathered to watch Joan begin her journey to find love again, they were decked out in DIY corsage kits, golden prom court sashes, prom king and queen headbands, tiaras, crowns, and a custom playlist of nostalgic hits to keep them dancing all night. If that wasn't enough excitement, these seniors got a huge surprise when Joan herself arrived at the event, ready to join the party and accompany the group during their viewing.

There was plenty of love and camaraderie in the air during this special event. "I think the biggest thing was [that] it's still fun to date at this age and you can still find love," said Joan about the unforgettable night.

Tune into The Golden Bachelorette Wednesdays on ABC.

The Walt Disney Co. is the parent company of ABC Localish and this station.

Two varieties of Grace canned chicken sausages sold in five states are the subject of a federal public health alert -- and shoppers are being urged to check their pantries. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued the alert on October 6 after discovering that the products were illegally imported from Jamaica, which is not eligible to export meat or poultry products to the United States.

The Homemade Cough Syrup That Works Better Than Store-Bought Ones

Every fall I make a batch of this ginger lemon honey syrup and keep it in the fridge. It’s cozy, it takes 30 minutes, and honey is one of the few home remedies with real research behind it for cough. 😊

Only one Shoney's restaurant is left in Virginia

In the late 1990s,Shoney's restaurants were in about 1,300 locations across more than 30 states. Today, there are only 50 restaurants nationwide. It is hard to believe that Shoney's was once a massive American restaurant chain with restaurants throughout Virginia, but now only one single location remains in the entire state. The lone location is at 9963 Hull Street Road in Midlothian (North Chesterfield), just outside of Richmond, VA, where this writer lives.

The Sweet Potatoes Granny Made Before Marshmallows Took Over Everything

Some sweet potatoes don’t need a blanket of marshmallows to earn space on the holiday table. Granny’s version is all about the potatoes themselves, cooked until tender and coated in that glossy, buttery, candied goodness that settles around the edges of the dish. Each bite lands somewhere between a side dish and dessert—soft sweet potatoes, warm sweetness, and a rich sauce that makes you understand why somebody always sneaks an extra spoonful before the platter gets passed. It’s the kind of recipe that looks completely at home beside ham, turkey, dressing, and all the other dishes families expect to see every year.

What I Wish I Knew About Staying on the Ship During a Port of Call

Book a cruise and you’re no doubt thinking about exploring exotic ports of call. But there’s a small — and seemingly growing — number of people that do the exact opposite. They elect to simply stay on the ship and have a dramatically different day than most passengers.

7 Foods Women Made for the Fall Church Bazaar

I use AI to help draft these articles. Every recipe and every fact in them is checked before publishing. The bazaar table ran the length of the church basement, and the women who filled it had been baking since Monday. Jars of jam stood in rows at one end. Pies came wrapped in wax paper. Cookies went by the bagful. By eleven on Saturday morning, the good fruitcakes were gone.

Forever Paws Animal Shelter is hoping a quiet, affectionate senior dog named Juliette will find a calm home where she can feel safe, loved and cared for. The shelter, located in Fall River, Massachusetts, describes the roughly eight-year-old dog as a Maltese mix weighing just under 11 pounds, and says her unusual look may leave people guessing: “This may actually be a lamb or perhaps some sort of strange bunny or maybe a tiny llama.”

I Forgot How Good the Spaghetti We Grew Up With Was

Not every spaghetti dinner needs a sauce that simmered since sunrise or a list of ingredients long enough to cover the refrigerator. Sometimes you want the familiar version: ground beef browned until savory, tomato sauce bubbling in the pan, and a big tangle of hot spaghetti ready to catch every bit of it. It’s the kind of dinner many of us remember from crowded weeknight tables, where somebody passed the Parmesan, garlic bread disappeared immediately, and nobody cared whether the sauce had a fancy Italian name. It just tasted like dinner was supposed to taste.

Four Ingredients Make This Lemon Cake Almost Unfair

A dessert with only four ingredients should not taste this rich, but lemon pie filling, cream cheese, cake mix, and butter know exactly how to work together. The lemon creates a bright, tangy layer while the cream cheese adds pockets of smooth richness. Cake mix and melted butter form a golden topping with soft sections, crisp edges, and the comforting flavor of a homemade cobbler. Every spoonful lands differently depending on how much citrus, cream cheese, and buttery crust it captures. The result feels more complicated than the assembly suggests, making this recipe ideal when time is short but dessert still needs to impress. As it bakes, the lemon bubbles around the edges and the top becomes golden, filling the kitchen with an aroma that makes waiting considerably more difficult.

Cabbage and Potatoes Still Know How to Feed a Family Without Emptying the Grocery Budget

Some of the most comforting meals come from ingredients that never needed to be fancy. This Irish-inspired bacon, cabbage, and potato soup brings together humble staples in one steaming pot, with smoky, salty bacon giving the broth the kind of flavor that makes simple vegetables taste like something you planned all day. The potatoes turn tender and hearty, cabbage softens into the savory broth, and those little pieces of bacon keep every spoonful interesting. It’s warm, rustic food built around ingredients generations of home cooks have relied on when dinner needed to stretch. Nothing here is trying to impress you with a long shopping list. It’s simply the sort of bubbling soup that fills the kitchen with a good smell and makes a loaf of bread on the counter suddenly feel like part of dinner.
