Tanglewood students summon Beetlejuice with Art Car

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice - the three words to summon the mischievous ghost from the Netherworld. Houston's Tanglewood Middle School students are using them as inspiration for their first ever art car.

"Last year's art car class came up with the idea on their own. I didn't help them," says Art Teacher Teresa Megahan.

The movie "Beetlejuice" was released in 1988 but the Tanglewood students have seen it a number of times.

Ms. Megahan says they knew what kind of design they needed, "they wanted the house in the middle, they wanted Beetlejuice on the front and they wanted the car to be a giant sandworm with the head on the back."

Building an Art car is all about learning. Tanglewood's lesson is a good one. It's taking things that people don't value that turn into trash and give them value.

7th grader Blake Mobley enjoyed the experience, "it's nice to create something and to pour stuff into it."

The construction has been a fulfilling experience for student Bethel Befekadu,"when you create something and you get to be part of it, it makes it all the more better."

The 37th annual Houston Art Car Parade rolls through downtown Houston April 13.

These Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Vanish Before the Party Starts

Ritz Party Sandwiches transform familiar buttery crackers into warm, savory appetizers that are exactly the right size for grabbing from a crowded table. Cheese and flavorful sandwich fillings sit between pairs of crackers, creating miniature bites with a crisp exterior and rich center. As they bake, the cheese melts, the filling warms, and the crackers become even more aromatic without losing the delicate texture that makes Ritz crackers so recognizable. Each small sandwich delivers salt, butter, cheese, and savory flavor in one or two bites, which explains why people rarely stop after taking only one. The recipe does not require elaborate pastry, specialty bread, or hours of preparation, yet the completed tray looks more thoughtful than simply opening a box of crackers. It is party food built around convenience without tasting like the cook took an obvious shortcut.

This Strawberry Dessert Was Made to Steal the Whole Table

Some desserts sit politely in the corner, but a Southern strawberry punch bowl cake is designed to command the center of the table. Layers of tender cake, juicy strawberries, and cool creamy filling build against the sides of a clear bowl, showing off every color and texture before anyone takes the first serving. The berries bring freshness, the cream makes each spoonful soft and luxurious, and the cake absorbs enough of the surrounding flavor to become even better as it chills. Instead of precise slices, this dessert offers generous scoops where the layers mingle together, making every bowlful slightly different. It feels festive without becoming formal and nostalgic without looking dated. Once the serving spoon reaches the bottom and lifts all those layers at once, people understand why punch bowl cakes have remained such beloved gathering desserts.

Remember the White Candy That Seemed to Appear in Every Grandma’s Christmas Tin?

Divinity is one of those old-fashioned candies that can instantly bring back a kitchen you haven’t stood in for years. Light, fluffy, and almost cloud-like, it’s nothing like dense fudge or chewy caramel. The outside sets with a delicate finish while the center stays soft and airy, with that unmistakable melt-away sweetness that made it a holiday candy-table favorite. It looks deceptively simple, but anyone who grew up watching a grandmother, aunt, or church-supper expert make a batch probably remembers there was a little technique involved. When it turns out right, those snowy spoonfuls look beautiful piled onto a platter—and somehow taste even better after you’ve spent years wondering why people stopped making them.

Mama’s Goulash Tastes Like the Dinner Everyone Remembers

Mama’s Goulash combines elbow macaroni, seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, and cheese into a saucy one-pan dinner that feels immediately familiar. The macaroni cooks until tender and catches the tomato-rich sauce inside every curve, while the beef makes the meal hearty enough to satisfy a crowded table. Onion and pepper soften into the background, contributing sweetness and savory flavor without distracting from the combination people expect. Cheese melts through the pasta and gives the sauce a comforting richness that plain beef and tomatoes cannot provide. This is American family-style goulash rather than a formal European stew, and its appeal comes from affordability, generosity, and the ability to turn basic pantry ingredients into a pot that smells like somebody’s childhood kitchen.

This Macaroni Salad Knows Why It Disappears First

Macaroni salad can be forgettable when it is merely cold pasta covered in dressing, but this version earns attention with a careful balance of sweet, tangy, creamy, and crunchy. Tender macaroni provides the familiar base, while crisp vegetables interrupt the softness and bring freshness to every scoop. The dressing coats the pasta generously without flattening the other flavors, delivering the nostalgic deli-counter quality people expect while tasting far more personal than something purchased by the pound. A touch of sweetness softens the tang and makes the salad especially friendly beside smoky barbecue, salty meats, and spicy dishes. After chilling, the ingredients settle together and the dressing moves into the pasta, creating the creamy consistency that makes people take a much larger spoonful than they originally intended.
