The City of Brotherly Love Softball League is celebrating 40 years of play.

The league is made up of players who identify as LGBTQIA+ and allies.

Over 40 years, it has grown from an informal gathering to an organized league with a commissioner, inclusive divisions, varying competition levels, more than 650 participants and 32 teams.

Sunday is gameday and the fields at Fairmount Park are packed with families, grilling and lots of softball.

And although the games are competitive, the goal is to create a social outlet for the LGBTQIA+ community.

These Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Vanish Before the Party Starts

Ritz Party Sandwiches transform familiar buttery crackers into warm, savory appetizers that are exactly the right size for grabbing from a crowded table. Cheese and flavorful sandwich fillings sit between pairs of crackers, creating miniature bites with a crisp exterior and rich center. As they bake, the cheese melts, the filling warms, and the crackers become even more aromatic without losing the delicate texture that makes Ritz crackers so recognizable. Each small sandwich delivers salt, butter, cheese, and savory flavor in one or two bites, which explains why people rarely stop after taking only one. The recipe does not require elaborate pastry, specialty bread, or hours of preparation, yet the completed tray looks more thoughtful than simply opening a box of crackers. It is party food built around convenience without tasting like the cook took an obvious shortcut.

Remember the White Candy That Seemed to Appear in Every Grandma’s Christmas Tin?

Divinity is one of those old-fashioned candies that can instantly bring back a kitchen you haven’t stood in for years. Light, fluffy, and almost cloud-like, it’s nothing like dense fudge or chewy caramel. The outside sets with a delicate finish while the center stays soft and airy, with that unmistakable melt-away sweetness that made it a holiday candy-table favorite. It looks deceptively simple, but anyone who grew up watching a grandmother, aunt, or church-supper expert make a batch probably remembers there was a little technique involved. When it turns out right, those snowy spoonfuls look beautiful piled onto a platter—and somehow taste even better after you’ve spent years wondering why people stopped making them.

Ground Beef Becomes Sunday Dinner Under This Gravy

Hamburger Steak and Gravy turns an everyday package of ground beef into the kind of meal associated with old diners, family kitchens, and Sunday suppers. The beef is shaped into seasoned patties and browned until the surfaces develop a savory crust. Tender onions cook in the same pan, collecting the flavor left behind by the meat before becoming part of a rich gravy. As the patties finish cooking in that sauce, they remain moist and absorb the onion flavor surrounding them. The result feels much more substantial than an ordinary hamburger without a bun. Each plate receives a proper portion of beef and enough gravy to cover whatever is served underneath, demonstrating how browning, onions, and a well-made pan sauce can make an affordable ingredient feel generous.

That Humble Head of Cabbage Can Become a Big Pot of Comfort in 30 Minutes

A head of cabbage doesn’t look particularly exciting sitting in the produce drawer, but give it a soup pot, a handful of vegetables, and some savory broth, and it becomes something wonderfully comforting. This hearty cabbage soup is packed with tender vegetables and warm, satisfying flavor, making it a practical choice when you want something nourishing without a complicated ingredient list. As the cabbage softens, it takes on the flavors of the broth and seasonings, while the other vegetables add color, texture, and natural sweetness. The result is a steaming bowl that feels light yet substantial, especially when you’re craving something homemade after several days of heavier meals. There’s nothing fancy about it, and that’s part of the appeal. Sometimes a simple vegetable soup is exactly what the kitchen—and the grocery budget—needs.

Five-Minute Fudge Is the Kind of Old-School Shortcut Worth Keeping Around

Homemade fudge sounds like the sort of candy that requires a thermometer, perfect timing, and somebody’s handwritten family recipe telling you exactly when to stop stirring. This Paula Deen-inspired 5-minute version goes in the opposite direction. It’s all about getting that rich, creamy chocolate payoff without turning candy-making into an afternoon project. The mixture comes together quickly, then settles into dense, smooth squares that look right at home in an old-fashioned candy tin. Each piece is rich enough to satisfy with just a few bites—although that rarely stops anyone from cutting a second sliver. It’s the kind of recipe that makes sense when the chocolate craving hits unexpectedly or you suddenly remember you promised to bring something sweet tomorrow.

7 Christmas Candies Mothers Made at the Kitchen Table

I use AI to help draft these articles. Every recipe and every fact in them is checked before publishing. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas from the 1950s into the 1980s, the kitchen in plenty of American homes shifted into a different gear. Cookies went first, then candy, and candy was a different kind of work. It called for a thermometer, the heaviest pot you owned, a marble slab or a sheet of buttered foil, and real attention. Women swapped these recipes on index cards at the church bazaar or through the small spiral-bound cookbooks their church and club auxiliaries printed and sold. When the candy was done it went into a tin on wax paper, stacked in layers by type, and passed along to neighbors or kept on the counter through the holiday.

The Soft Italian Cookies That Disappeared Before Grandma Finished Setting Out the Coffee

Some cookies are remembered for their crunch, but the ones that stay with you are often the soft, delicate treats that practically melt when you take a bite. Italian almond ricotta cookies have that wonderful old-fashioned charm, with a tender, pillowy texture and a gentle almond sweetness that feels right at home beside a cup of coffee. The ricotta gives the cookies their soft, almost cake-like crumb, while the almond flavor adds a fragrant richness that makes them taste special without being overly sweet. Imagine a platter of little golden cookies cooling on the kitchen counter, their sweet aroma drifting through the house while someone puts the coffee on. They’re the kind of homemade treat that doesn’t need chocolate chips or elaborate decorations to win people over. One soft bite is usually enough to explain why families keep recipes like this for generations.
