It took a long time from when the Crimson Crisp apple was first bred until it was available to be grown commercially. It was first developed in the 1970s by the PRI (Purdue, Rutgers, and Illnois) co-operative. It wasn't until 2006 that the apple was released for growers. On Friday, March 15, 2013, three workers who did jobs for a Plainview property owner burned leaves and debris in two 55-gallon barrels on the strip of old railroad land beside his lot, then doused the fires with five-gallon buckets of water. Early Monday, fire destroyed the wood-frame Quonset barn across the strip. Its owner sued the neighbor personally, a judge awarded $70,000, and the ruling held on appeal.
