Royal Court trades parade wave for a visit to Huntington Hospital’s NICU
By Sheryl Turner,
23 hours agoHalloween spirit came to Huntington Hospital when the Tournament of Roses Queen and Royal Court made its annual “trick and treat” visit to the hospital’s pediatric patients, the babies in its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and their families. The Queen and her court spread holiday cheer through the halls, bringing smiles to children, parents, and staff alike.
The court members arrived in festive Halloween-themed garb and handed out treats, posed for photos, and spent time with young patients and their families. For many of the children, the visit offered a welcome break from the routines of hospital life. Many of them face serious health problems, and even a brief chance to dress up and play can make a long day feel lighter.
Parents enjoyed the visits as much as the children did. Many families spend extended periods at the hospital, and the Royal Court’s arrival gave them a moment of levity and connection during demanding days. Staff members also took part in the celebration, pausing from their work to join in the festivities.
Amy Pendleton, MSN, MPH, RNC-WHNP, director of the Women’s & Children’s Division at Huntington Hospital, said the visit holds special meaning for the hospital community. “Halloween is such a special time for families, especially those celebrating their baby’s very first,” she said. For families spending the day in the hospital, she explained, the visit brings “a little extra joy and a sense of normalcy to an otherwise challenging time.”
Pendleton also noted that the tradition is a favorite among the hospital’s own team. Her staff works hard every day to care for patients, she said, and they value the chance to share in moments of happiness with the families they serve.
The Royal Court’s visit is a yearly event with the goal of bringing happiness and goodwill to the children who need it most. The hospital’s leaders say they are grateful for the court members’ time, kindness, and enthusiasm.
“We are so grateful to the Tournament of Roses and these remarkable young women for sharing their time, kindness and enthusiasm with our Huntington family,” Pendleton said, “and making Halloween a little more magical.”
For the young patients in Pasadena’s pediatric wards and NICU, this year’s royal visit was a reminder that even in the hardest seasons, there is room for play, wonder, and a little bit of magic.
