Hartford lawyer finally decided to open his own firm to allow him to help working class clients

For Jamal C. Wright, starting his own law firm wasn’t part of some long, carefully mapped-out plan. It was, in his words, the result of “a series of very polite exits.”

Before founding The Wright Law Office, LLC in April 2024, Jamal’s path moved through a mix of industries and experiences. With a dual degree in Finance and Journalism from Syracuse, he began his career in the financial world, including a role as a paralegal in the Antitrust Division at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York. But stability never quite stuck.

He got fired.

Twice.

Those moments, as frustrating as they were at the time, became turning points. After relocating to Connecticut in 2014, Jamal pivoted toward law, eventually finding himself working on habeas cases—complex legal efforts focused on individuals who had already been convicted. It was challenging work, but also limiting. He didn’t want to be boxed into a single niche. He wanted to build something broader.

Something more human.

“If no one was going to hire me to be the kind of lawyer I wanted to be,” he realized, “I’d have to hire myself.”

That mindset took shape during his time at UConn Law School, where he was accepted into the school’s Law Firm Incubator Program. It was an immersive, hands-on experience—part classroom, part real-world training ground. He spent his days working with low-income residents through the Connecticut Community Law Center, helping people navigate legal challenges that often felt overwhelming.

It was there that everything clicked.

The practice of law, he realized, wasn’t just about knowledge or strategy. It was about service.

That philosophy is now at the core of The Wright Law Office.

Jamal describes himself as an attorney for working-class people—someone who approaches each case not as a transaction, but as a responsibility. In an industry that can often feel impersonal, he leans in the opposite direction. Transparent billing. Open communication. And a focus on the human element behind every case.

If there’s one word he uses to describe running a solo practice, it’s “stress.” Not the occasional kind, but the constant, ever-present kind that comes with being fully responsible for every outcome. There’s no buffer. No one else to absorb the pressure when things don’t go as planned.

“The buck stops entirely with me,” he says.

And yet, that same pressure has sharpened his focus.

It’s pushed him to be more prepared, more thoughtful, and more intentional in every decision he makes. It’s also reshaped how he sees himself—not just as a lawyer, but as the face of his business and a member of the community he serves.

That connection to the community runs deep.

Much of Jamal’s work is inspired by his own personal story, particularly his relationship with his mother. Raised by a single mom who later attended law school herself, he carries that experience into his practice today. It’s why he makes a point to support single mothers in the Greater Hartford area, offering reduced fees and additional guidance whenever possible.

For him, it’s not just business.

It’s legacy.

And it’s those moments—helping someone achieve a goal that matters to them, whether big or small—that keep him grounded in the work.

Looking ahead, Jamal is thinking about growth, but in a measured way. Expanding his reach. Taking on more cases through state-appointed work. And continuing to scale the firm without losing what makes it different.

It’s about impact.

And building a practice where people feel seen, heard, and supported—no matter what they’re facing.
