This music school in Miami is building the city’s next generation of musicians

On a stretch of Southwest Miami where families balance busy school schedules with the rhythm of everyday life, Miami Music Stars has become a place where young musicians begin discovering something bigger than notes and scales. Inside the studio on SW 134th Street, piano keys echo through practice rooms while students learn not just how to play—but how to focus, grow, and believe in their abilities.

For founder Viviana Diaz, the journey into music education began much earlier than most teachers expect.

She was just 15 years old when she started teaching piano.

At the time, pop culture was booming with the rise of New Kids on the Block, whose music helped spark her early fascination with performance and songwriting. But her deepest inspiration came from closer to home: her own piano teacher. The recitals, the trophies, and the sense of excitement around learning music left a lasting impression.

“She motivated me to start my own studio,” Viviana recalls.

While still studying herself, she began teaching students in that same teacher’s studio—passing on what she was learning even as she continued developing her own skills.

Music quickly became more than a hobby. It became a calling.

Years later, while driving along the expressway and admiring the city where she was born and raised—Miami, a place deeply connected to her Cuban heritage—the name for her future school arrived unexpectedly. She describes it as a kind of “heavenly download.”

The name captured both the spirit of the city and the belief that every student who walks through the door has the potential to shine.

Viviana first opened her studio from her home in 1994, teaching neighborhood students and gradually building a reputation within the community. Over time, the studio grew steadily through word-of-mouth and parent referrals. In 2020, after more than two decades of teaching, she formally registered the business and expanded its presence with a dedicated studio location.

At Miami Music Stars, the teaching philosophy centers on connection. Viviana believes that building a genuine relationship with students helps remove the pressure often associated with learning an instrument.

“When students feel comfortable, they relax and have fun while learning,” she explains.

That sense of ease allows students to focus more effectively. Lessons emphasize not just playing songs but understanding how to practice intentionally—directing attention where improvement is needed so that progress feels real and motivating.

The results speak for themselves. The school has earned more than 150 five-star Google reviews from families who credit the studio for helping their children develop both musical ability and confidence.

For a small, independent music school, Viviana sees those reviews as something special.

“That’s a lot of stars,” she says with pride.

Like many small businesses, growth has come with challenges. Space limitations remain one of the biggest obstacles, especially when trying to expand programs or host larger events. Economic fluctuations also affect families’ ability to commit to lessons. Yet Viviana’s approach remains consistent: focus on the students, provide quality instruction, and build relationships that last.

Leadership has always been part of her personality. Running a studio requires not just musical knowledge but organization, communication, and the ability to guide young learners through moments of frustration and breakthrough alike.

Looking ahead, Viviana hopes to expand Miami Music Stars beyond piano. Offering lessons for additional instruments would allow more students to explore music in ways that match their interests and talents.

But the heart of the studio will remain the same as when it began in her home more than thirty years ago: helping students find joy in music while developing the discipline and confidence that carries far beyond the practice room.
