This growing nj small business provides the best exterior cleaning and prioritizes customer service
On quiet residential streets across Morris and Warren counties—where maples lean over rooftops and autumn leaves collect faster than homeowners can climb a ladder—there’s a small crew known for showing up when they say they will. They arrive with harnesses, blowers, extension ladders, and a straightforward promise: do the job right, communicate clearly, and treat every customer like the only one on the schedule.
Gutter Boys started in the spring of 2023 with a five-gallon bucket, a borrowed ladder, and a leaf blower. Founder Jeff Book had just left a different kind of elevation behind. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island, he spent five years climbing trees as an arborist. The work was physical and demanding—often beautiful, sometimes dangerous—and it taught him precision, safety, and respect for homeowners’ property. But something was missing.
As a new homeowner himself in Long Valley, Jeff saw firsthand how difficult it could be to find a reliable home service company—someone who answered the phone, showed up on time, and communicated clearly about what needed to be done. The gap felt obvious. If he could combine craftsmanship with consistency and trust, there was room to build something meaningful.
From the beginning, the mission was simple: treat every customer like your only customer. Lead with integrity. Build trust within the community. Deliver the highest quality work possible.
Initially, Gutter Boys focused on gutter cleanings and window washing. Word traveled quickly. Today, the company also offers gutter guard installation, house washing, roof washing, Christmas light installation, and recurring service contracts for homeowners who prefer not to track seasonal maintenance on their own. The team now includes four full-time employees serving Morris, Warren, Sussex, Hunterdon, Somerset, and parts of Essex County.
Jeff remains hands-on. He handles estimates and much of the behind-the-scenes coordination that keeps the schedule running smoothly. Maureen, the office administrator, manages communication and logistics. Harris and Nolan serve as field technicians, often the friendly faces homeowners see on ladders and rooftops.
The name “Gutter Boys” has less to do with construction and more to do with music—it was inspired by a song from the punk band The Bobby Lees. The edge of the name contrasts slightly with the company’s reputation for polished communication, but that balance fits Jeff’s personality: grounded, approachable, and serious about quality.
As the business grows, maintaining attention to detail becomes the central challenge. Scaling a service company can strain response times and consistency, but Jeff is deliberate about organic growth. He would rather expand steadily than compromise on workmanship or client experience. Each property is treated as a partnership. Clean gutters prevent foundation damage. Clear downspouts protect landscaping. Well-maintained windows brighten interiors. It’s preventative care as much as cosmetic improvement.
For Jeff, the most rewarding part of the job isn’t the finished roofline—it’s the relationship. He enjoys meeting homeowners, hearing their concerns, and building long-term trust. When clients call to say how impressed they were with Harris or Nolan’s work—or how smooth the scheduling process was with Maureen—it reinforces the culture he’s trying to build.
Community ties matter, too. Gutter Boys recently sponsored an Oktoberfest event led by Zig Meister Brewing in Hackettstown and installed the brewery’s Christmas lights during the holiday season. Referrals have become a steady engine for growth. After one satisfied customer shared their experience on the Long Valley Moms Facebook group, new inquiries followed quickly—a reminder that in tight-knit towns, reputation travels faster than advertising.
The company’s newest offering—recurring gutter cleaning and window washing contracts—reflects Jeff’s practical mindset. Homeowners don’t always want to remember when their gutters need clearing. Automating that care reduces stress and prevents costly repairs. It’s another way to turn a service call into an ongoing relationship.
Looking ahead, Jeff’s goal hasn’t changed from day one: continue offering the highest quality exterior cleaning services while expanding thoughtfully across the region. Growth, for him, isn’t measured only by territory but by trust—earned roof by roof, house by house.
In neighborhoods across northwest New Jersey, the Gutter Boys truck pulls up with ladders secured and schedules confirmed. The work may be seasonal, but the standard remains constant: show up, communicate clearly, and leave every home better than you found it.
