This Rose Hill spot is a love letter to Ireland and aims to push the boundaries of a modern pub

In the lively Rose Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, there’s an Irish bar where the Guinness flows, the cocktails come with stories, and regulars are greeted by name. But Tara Rose isn’t just another neighborhood spot—it’s a love letter to contemporary Ireland, told through warm hospitality, elevated comfort food, and a carefully curated pint.

Opened in 2019 by Kevin Doherty, a native of Donegal, Ireland, Tara Rose was born from a vision: to bring the richness of Irish culture into harmony with the polish and energy of New York City. “Blending the charm and character of Ireland with the refinement of NYC was always a goal,” says Kevin. “Tara Rose marries both.”

The name itself reflects that marriage—“Tara” for the ancient hills where Ireland’s high kings were crowned, and “Rose” for the Rose Hill corner of Murray Hill where the bar proudly sits. With the help of managing partner Conor Fox, Tara Rose has grown into a space that balances tradition with a distinctly modern spirit.

From the start, Tara Rose set out to challenge expectations of what an Irish pub could be. The cocktail program is ambitious, laced with storytelling and creativity. Beloved classics are reimagined with local, seasonal ingredients, while each drink offers a wink of Irish history. Behind the bar, regulars swap jokes with bartenders who remember their last order. On any given night, live music drifts from the corner stage while a mix of locals, tourists, and first-timers fill the room with conversation.

The food is just as important. Irish staples like Chicken Curry made with McDonnell’s curry sauce (flown in from Ireland) or the homemade Sausage Roll with Ballymaloe relish transport guests straight to Dublin. The quinoa salad—light but satisfying with house-made honey dressing—is a favorite among date-night diners, while hearty classics like the Tara Rose Burger and Caesar wrap keep the menu grounded in neighborhood comfort.

What truly sets Tara Rose apart, though, is its connection to the community. “We’ve been called the best first date spot in New York City,” Kevin says with a grin. “And we’ve got the engagements and weddings to prove it.” The team takes pride in being a part of people’s milestones, from awkward introductions to anniversaries. And the events they host—like the annual “Summer Shake Off,” where bartenders compete in cocktail showdowns to roaring laughter—only deepen that bond.

Opening just before the pandemic posed its share of challenges. “Our business was gaining traction right as the world shut down,” Kevin reflects. But Tara Rose’s team leaned into problem-solving and perseverance, using their creativity and grit to build something lasting. What emerged was a stronger, more resilient space—one deeply rooted in its neighborhood, yet broad in its appeal.

Now, Tara Rose has a younger sibling just steps from Madison Square Garden: Tara Mór. With the same spirit and elevated experience, it continues the mission of redefining what an Irish bar can look and feel like in today’s world. Between the two, Kevin and his team are building a new kind of legacy—one rooted in culture, warmth, and community.

“Our goal is to raise the bar—literally and figuratively,” Kevin says. “We want everyone to have a Tara near them someday.”

For now, New Yorkers can find comfort in knowing one already exists—and whether you come for the curry, the cocktails, or the camaraderie, you’ll leave with a story of your own.
