A new Creole-inspired restaurant opens on the work and inspiration of 3 generations of women
A new gem of a restaurant has arrived in Orangeburg, bringing authentic Cajun and Creole flavors to the community with a heartfelt family story behind it. Sunday Girl's Griddle & Grill, a restaurant named in honor of co-owner Angela Lewis’ mother, is quickly becoming a beloved neighborhood spot for locals and students alike.
Angela Lewis and her daughter, Chef Aliesha Howell, opened Sunday Girl in January of this year, just a few months after moving to the area. The original reason for their move to Orangeburg was a personal one: they moved to care for Angela’s aging mother, who had spent over 50 years as a caterer. In a touching tribute, she not only inspired the name of the restaurant but even chose it herself just weeks before its grand opening.
Sunday Girl is a celebration of Louisiana’s rich culinary heritage. The menu, crafted by Chef Aliesha, features authentic Cajun and Creole dishes that transport diners straight to the bayous and bustling streets of New Orleans. Customer favorites include shrimp étouffée and grits, flavorful gumbo, po’boys, and seafood platters. For those with a sweet tooth, the restaurant offers weekly baked goods, and their signature fried chicken and flavored waffles have already garnered a dedicated following.
Launching a restaurant always comes with challenges, and Sunday Girl was no exception. Angela and Aliesha worked tirelessly to secure funding and navigate the complexities of running a new business. “Finding capital is always a challenge,” Angela admits with a laugh, “but maintaining a steady business flow day to day is also a learning experience.” Despite these hurdles, they opened their doors just two months after securing a location, a testament to their dedication and hard work.
One of the most rewarding aspects of their journey has been the warm embrace from the Orangeburg community. Located near student housing for Claflin University and South Carolina State University, Sunday Girl has become a favorite among college students looking for a taste of home-cooked comfort. “Connecting with the students is rewarding,” Angela shares. “The city as a whole, from local government to community members, has welcomed us with open arms.” In just three months, the restaurant has expanded beyond its walls, offering pop-up events, catering services, and private dining experiences. They've even started to mix in karaoke nights.
Looking ahead, Angela and Aliesha have big dreams for Sunday Girl. They hope to become a pillar of the Orangeburg community, not just through their food but through outreach and volunteerism. “As a family, we’ve always been involved in charity work, and we want to continue that here,” Angela says. Expansion is also on the horizon- they plan to grow their catering services and eventually open two to three additional restaurant concepts in Orangeburg and surrounding areas.
For now, the mother-daughter duo is focused on serving up incredible food and fostering a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels at home. Their gratitude for the community’s support is immeasurable. “We just want to say thank you to our customers who have been the core of our existence these past three months,” Angela expresses. “We’re looking forward to serving you this summer and beyond—we have some fun events planned, so stay tuned!”
Whether you’re craving a hearty bowl of gumbo, a classic po’boy, or just some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality, Sunday Girl is the place to be. One bite, and you’ll understand why this family-run restaurant has been embraced by the community.

Sunday Girl's Griddle & Grill is open Mon–Tues from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thurs - Sat from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 1499 Russell Street, Orangeburg, SC 29115.
