9 hours agoFCI Thomson's satellite prison camp will permanently close.
According to a release from FCI Thomson:
On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Federal Correctional Institution Thomson in Thomson, Illinois announced its adjacent minimum security satellite camp will no longer house inmates. The satellite facility will remain in operation and will be repurposed for staffing and administrative functions.
According to the release, staffing will not be impacted by the change.
Jon Zumkehr, president of AFGE Local 4070, released the following statement on the closure:

This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. We are grateful to learn that no jobs will be lost with the permanent closure of the federal prison camp at FCI Thomson. At the same time, this decision underscores the urgent need to address the severe retention and recruitment crisis facing the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Pay and benefits remain a major problem—our health insurance premiums rose more than 10% last year and are set to increase another 10% this year. If we want to keep experienced staff and attract new hires, these issues must be fixed now.
