Gray Matters Collective hosts free QCA mental-health workshop
By Linda Cook,
1 days agoThe Gray Matters Collective will host a free mental-health advocacy workshop from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady St., Davenport. The event is free and open to the public, but participants are asked to register here.
The workshop is hands-on. Participants will practice mental-health advocacy skills, learn about resources available in the Quad Cities area and beyond, and spend time reflecting on their own experiences and the barriers that can make it hard to help someone else. A central goal is helping participants feel more prepared to be present with a person experiencing suicidal thoughts.
The workshop is provided by Joe and Cherie Payne, members of St. Paul.
The Gray Matters began with a mental-health campaign at Augustana College in 2018 led by Haley DeGreve and Kevin Donovan, with the mission to inspire and support people to become mental-health and suicide-prevention advocates by building communities and connecting people to education and resources.
The workshop is designed for anyone who wants to be a more confident support for family members, friends, co-workers, or neighbors. No prior training or experience is needed, and participants will not be asked to share more than they choose.
Anyone in the U.S. who is in crisis or worried about someone else can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, at any time.
