People in Coal Valley can now shop at the only grocery store in the village. Managers cut the ribbon on the new Fareway store Tuesday.

"I've been with the company for two years now, and this is the seventh store that I have been a part of helping to open," said Fareway Spokesperson Elias Johnson. "I've never seen so many people not only leading up to tonight, to tonight coming and wanting to shop."

The new store buzzed with excitement Tuesday, with a full parking lot for the ribbon cutting.

"This Fareway, the people, are just incredibly nice," said Tracy Finch, who commutes from Prophetstown to Milan for work. "Actually, I'm a big shopper of the other Fareway in Moline, so I look forward to leaving our warehouse over in Milan and coming in this way. It's on my way home."

Development on the store dates back to 2018. The $10-million project will bring up to 100 jobs to the community, with the village's mayor calling it a cornerstone for the future.

"It's been needed for so long," said Coal Valley Mayor Michael Bartels. "We're close to 15 to 20 years of not having a grocery store, and it's just going to fill a void that we've needed for a long time."

The mayor says it brings many prospects to the table.

"We've had lots of inquiries from other businesses," said Bartels. "Other business opportunities wanting to come in because of Fareway. Fareway has set that standard. They're the hub that we've been looking for."

Store hours will be 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Remember the White Candy That Seemed to Appear in Every Grandma’s Christmas Tin?

Divinity is one of those old-fashioned candies that can instantly bring back a kitchen you haven’t stood in for years. Light, fluffy, and almost cloud-like, it’s nothing like dense fudge or chewy caramel. The outside sets with a delicate finish while the center stays soft and airy, with that unmistakable melt-away sweetness that made it a holiday candy-table favorite. It looks deceptively simple, but anyone who grew up watching a grandmother, aunt, or church-supper expert make a batch probably remembers there was a little technique involved. When it turns out right, those snowy spoonfuls look beautiful piled onto a platter—and somehow taste even better after you’ve spent years wondering why people stopped making them.

This Three-Ingredient Chicken Tastes Like a Church Supper Classic

Some recipes earn their place in community cookbooks because they are dependable, affordable, and capable of feeding hungry people without exhausting the cook. This three-ingredient church supper chicken fits that tradition perfectly. The chicken bakes beneath a flavorful coating that helps keep the meat juicy while creating the kind of warm, comforting aroma associated with fellowship halls and Sunday dinners. There are no complicated marinades, hard-to-find seasonings, or multiple pans competing for counter space. Three ingredients go into the dish, and the oven turns them into a family-friendly meal that tastes much more involved. The finished chicken is tender, savory, and ready to share the plate with nearly any traditional side already planned.

The Soup I Make When a Light Little Bowl Isn’t Going to Count as Dinner

Some soups leave you looking for a sandwich ten minutes later. This creamy sausage soup isn’t interested in being one of them. Savory sausage gives the whole pot a rich, smoky backbone while a velvety broth turns it into the kind of spoon-coating comfort food that feels substantial from the first bowl. Everything comes together in one pot, letting those browned sausage bits and seasonings work their way through the creamy base instead of disappearing down the drain with another dirty pan. Serve it bubbling hot with crusty bread and you’ve got exactly what a cold, tired evening calls for: something creamy, hearty, and satisfying enough that nobody asks what else is for dinner.
