QCA residents can safely dispose of old medications at the next DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Oct. 24 between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Drop off sites will be at police departments and sheriffs’ offices, including the Rock Island and Milan Police Departments. Click here to find locations.

Unwanted medications can be dropped off at collection sites around the area for safe disposal. Items that can be dropped off include prescription and over the counter medications and patches. Vape devices and e-cigarettes will be accepted only if batteries are removed. Liquids, inhalers, needles and sharps will not be accepted.

The Take Back Day website said over 4,300 law enforcement agencies participated in the April 2026 collection day at 4,417 collection sites where 321 tons of medications collected. Since the program began, over 10,000 tons of medications have been safely discarded. A post on the Rock Island Police Department’s Facebook page said the April 2026 collection day collected over 300 pounds of medication from Rock Island County residents.

Harvard Health said discarding medication in household trash or by pouring them down a drain leads to chemicals in soil, waterways and groundwater. Used needs/sharps that are improperly discarded can poke holes in trash bags and injure sanitation workers.
