IOWA -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating after thousands of gallons of manure were spilled in Davis County, and several hundred gallons were spilled in Crawford County.

According to the DNR, at around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, staff were notified of an overturned semi that was hauling manure outside Lake Wapello State Park on Eagle Boulevard in Davis County. Roughly 6,000 to 6,500 gallons of manure spilled into a ditch near the park's entrance.

The DNR said a dam was built to prevent the manure from entering PeeDee Creek. So far, the DNR said no dead fish have been observed, and the park remains open to visitors.

On Monday night, DNR staff were notified of a manure spill in rural Crawford County. The DNR said that about 750 gallons of manure spilled into Buffalo Creek near 240th Street when a bolt broke on a manure tanker hitch, which caused the tanker to travel down an embankment into the streambed.

The DNR said that when staff arrived at the site the following day, manure had entered the creek, but a dam had been installed to contain the spill, ensuring the manure didn't travel farther downstream. Bales were also used to soak up the manure.

According to the DNR, crews are pumping the manure water out of the creek, and soil will be excavated if needed. No dead fish have been found.

Both manure spills remain under investigation.
