Two men arrested in connection with Rock Island shooting

1 days agoTwo Rock Island men have been arrested on warrants in connection with a May shooting in Rock Island, according to a news release from Rock Island Police.
Shortly after 5 p.m. May 28, Rock Island Police responded to the 700 block of 11th Street for reports of gunfire. Officers found multiple shell casings at the scene, and a 29-year-old man later arrived at UnityPoint Hospital with non-life- threatening gunshot wounds to his arm and leg.
The Rock Island Police Department Criminal Investigations Division identified two suspects and obtained arrest warrants for 18-year-old Jackson Hatungimana and 19-year-old Joseph A. Akins Jr. Hatungimana was arrested on June 3, 2026, for aggravated battery with a firearm. He remains in the Rock Island County Jail pending court proceedings.
Shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, Rock Island police and U.S. Marshals found and arrested Akins in the 1300 block of 3rd Street on warrants for aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery – discharge of a firearm. Officers served a search warrant there and found two guns.
