Screenings crucial for early cancer detection: UnityPoint Health
By Sharon Wren,
15 hours agoOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Iowa’s second-highest cancer rate in the nation shows that regular screenings are one of the most important tools for early detection.
UnityPoint Health – Trinity encourages women to make annual mammograms a priority during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer remains the most diagnosed cancer in Scott County, with about 160 new cases diagnosed each year. Call (309) 779-5870 to schedule a screening mammogram.
"Early detection of breast cancer leads to better outcomes and higher survival rates," said Melinda Hass, MD, Medical Director of Trinity Breast Center. "Regular screening mammography simply saves lives. Taking the time to schedule your screening today can make a significant difference in your long-term health.”
UnityPoint Health has financial assistance programs and increased appointment availability to help women access these potentially life-saving screenings. Support from Trinity Health Foundation donors helps uninsured and under-insured women qualify for no-cost breast screening and diagnostic services. Call (309) 779-2486 or email QC_outreach@unitypoint.org for more information. UnityPoint Health also offers evening and weekend mammography appointments in both Iowa and Illinois year-round.
"We recognize the importance of ensuring our community has access to breast cancer screening and diagnostic services,” said Dr. Hass. "Whether barriers are financial, scheduling related or otherwise, we are committed to helping more people receive the care they need."
The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammography screening starting at age 40 for women at average risk for breast cancer. Women at higher risk may need to start screening earlier. Monthly self-breast exams can also help women become familiar with changes in their breasts and identify concerns that should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
