Free Rock Island sessions help explain Medicare, Social Security

"Understanding Medicare for 2027" will be offered at two places and times. Insurance specialist Kara Wolf will break down what enrollees need to know before open enrollment arrives in October.
The free information sessions can help current or future Medicare participants make more informed decisions. Understanding Medicare presentations will be offered at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Rock Island Public Library Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road, and again at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Rock Island Library Watts-Midtown Branch, 2715 30th St. Both are free and open to the public.
For those considering retirement, attending the three-part “Retirement University” sessions might be a good strategy for achieving the financial results you want. Financial advisor, fiduciary, and retirement planning expert Jaime Ragins will share important information and advice to help you make financial decisions as you plan for the years of your retirement. Topics include:
- Part 1: Social Security & Medicare: Tuesday, Sept. 29, options you have for claiming Social Security and Medicare.
- Part 2: Tax planning in retirement, Tuesday, Oct. 6, planning for taxation when moving from employment to retirement.
- Part 3: Financial estate planning, Tuesday, Oct. 13, factors to keep in mind when planning a personal estate.
Each session is offered from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rock Island Library Watts-Midtown Branch, 2715 30th St., Rock Island. They are free and open to everyone.

Yes, Dr. Sarah Axelrath of Colorado Coalition for the Homeless told the Denver City Council Monday. Axelrath, an addiction medicine specialist, said going after drug traffickers doesn’t make people stop using substances. In fact, she said it disrupts “an already potent and unpredictable drug supply.” Demand doesn’t go down after a bust. New players come to market who could be peddling an even more toxic product.
