UPDATE: A news release from the Rock Island County Integrity Task Force has more information about the man who died at the jail.

"The individual was initially held at the Rock Island County Jail on June 12, 2026, on a charge of aggravated battery," the release said. "On June 13, 2026, the individual was remanded to the custody of the jail by the court for a violation of pretrial release on a previous charge and was ordered detained."

"The individual was housed in Q-Block, a medical day room, with three other individuals in custody. Jail staff immediately summoned emergency medical services from the Rock Island Fire Department. The individual was subsequently pronounced deceased. An initial investigation found no suspicious marks or injuries on the detainee, however an autopsy will be
conducted by the Rock Island County Coroner’s Office."

Rock Island County Sheriff Darren Hart immediately asked that the Rock Island County Integrity Task Force (ITF) respond and conduct an independent investigation of the incident. The ITF is led by the Illinois State Police and is made up of investigators from several area law enforcement agencies. No Rock Island County Sheriff's Office deputy or officer is participating in the ITF investigation."

"The Rock Island County Sheriff's Office maintains interior video surveillance, correctional officer body-worn camera footage and digital logs and records," the release said. "These materials, along with interviews, autopsy findings, and other evidence, will be reviewed as part of the investigation. The investigation will also be reviewed by Rock Island County State's Attorney Dora Villarreal and Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson."
