Emerging research shows the drugs, which have proven effective in treating obesity and diabetes, may also be useful in treating addiction.</p><p>The medications' full potential is coming to light as more people are prescribed a GLP-1, which includes the brand names Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Zepbound. As 15% of Americans <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/712157/glp-usage-reaches-new-high.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">say they've tried a GLP-1</a>, researchers are learning more about how it impacts all aspects of life, not just diet.</p><p>"This drug has been available in the medical community since 2005," said Dr. Eugene Lucas, professor and coordinator of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Wilkes University. "And over time, when physicians are ordering these medications for people with obesity, diabetes, they're finding that if they have a concurrent addictive disorder, and specifically alcohol, that they're either cutting back or stopping their alcohol use."</p><p>A <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/2825650" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">large study</a> of more than 200,000 people in Sweden found using a GLP-1 drug was associated with a decreased risk of hospitalization from alcohol use disorder. </p><p>Another study by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine, which looked at 600,000 veterans with type 2 diabetes, found the medications were tied to a lower risk of developing any kind of substance use disorder. </p><a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/ozempic-teeth-dentists-warn-of-new-glp-1-side-effect/" class="promo-link__link" target="&quot;_blank&quot;" rel="nofollow"> Ozempic teeth: Dentists warn of new GLP-1 side effect </a><p>“In addiction medicine, a lot of treatments target just one thing – for example, a nicotine patch helps with smoking, but not alcohol – but there is no medication that works across addictive substances, let alone all of them,” <a href="https://medicine.washu.edu/news/glp-1-medications-get-at-the-heart-of-addiction-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">said the study's senior author</a>, Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly.</p><p>If GLP-1s are able to work across multiple addictions – not just alcohol or one type of drug – they could be a promising treatment path. </p><p>Treating addiction is not an FDA-approved use of GLP-1 medication, but Lucas said that could be a possibility down the line if enough research proves it works.</p><p>Alcoholism is researched more than other types of substance use, Lucas said. "The focus has been mostly on alcohol. There have been some studies done on cocaine, methamphetamine, and opioid addiction, but the findings are not conclusive." </p><p>More research is also needed to understand why the drugs meant to treat obesity and diabetes could work to curb smoking, drinking or drug use. Al-Aly said GLP-1s may help with addiction because they target the craving center of the brain. </p><p>"It blunts that craving that pulls people toward whatever they’re addicted to," he said.</p><p>“It’s so exciting to see GLP-1s come into this level of the research to say, ‘Hey, this is another tool that we can use to help people, reduce their alcohol intake or reach abstinence from alcohol,’ whatever that goal is," said Dr. Samuel Parish, an addiction medicine specialist, told <a href="https://www.counton2.com/news/study-underway-to-test-glp-1s-for-alcohol-addiction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Nexstar's WCBD</a>. “But at this moment, we can’t say with certainty.”</p><em>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. Since Hawaii and most of Arizona <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/nexstar_media_wire/5773885-2-states-approved-permanent-standard-time-others-are-hoping-to-do-the-same/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">already observe year-round standard time</a>, they would remain exempt.</p><a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/6011868-when-does-daylight-saving-time-end-in-2026-as-early-as-possible/" class="promo-link__link" target="&quot;_blank&quot;" rel="nofollow"> When does daylight saving time end in 2026? As early as possible </a><p>Outside of those two states, sunrises and sunsets would happen later than they currently do between early November and March. </p><p>In much of the U.S., the <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/5978710-how-often-the-sun-would-rise-after-8-a-m-under-permanent-daylight-saving-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">sun wouldn't rise until after 8 a.m.</a> for at least part of the winter. For some, the sun wouldn't come up until after 9 a.m.</p><p>The trade-off, though, would be later sunsets in winter. </p><p>Depending on where you live, many winter sunsets may happen in the 4 or 5 o'clock hours. If our clocks did not fall back an hour in November, as they have done for years, those sunsets would shift to the 5 and 6 o'clock hours, respectively. </p><p>You may even be privy to a sunset after 7 p.m. — something we don't see during winter now.</p><a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/5999914-how-often-the-summer-sun-would-set-before-8-p-m-under-permanent-standard-time/" class="promo-link__link" target="&quot;_blank&quot;" rel="nofollow"> How often the summer sun would set before 8 p.m. under permanent standard time </a><p>The interactive table below shows how many winter days you would see sunsets after 6 p.m. (or 7 p.m., for some) if permanent daylight saving time were to take effect. You can also view the latest winter sunset each city would experience under permanent daylight saving time. For cities like Green Bay and Burlington, Vermont, which each experience more than 90 winter sunsets before 5 p.m, the change could be well-received. </p><p>Juneau, Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky, would have some of the latest possible sunsets, all coming after 7:40 p.m. in early March. They would, however, receive the brunt of the less-desirable part of permanent daylight saving time: <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/5978710-how-often-the-sun-would-rise-after-8-a-m-under-permanent-daylight-saving-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">late winter sunrises</a>.</p><a href="https://thehill.com/business/economy/6025743-are-mass-layoffs-coming-most-states-let-you-check-heres-how/" class="promo-link__link" target="&quot;_blank&quot;" rel="nofollow"> Are mass layoffs coming? Grand Rapids would have one of the latest sunrises in the country at 9:14 a.m.</p><p>It's the late sunrises that <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/5969835-why-permanent-daylight-saving-time-has-failed-in-the-us-before/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">contributed to the downfall of permanent daylight saving time</a> in the past. It could <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/nexstar_media_wire/4939267-why-experts-say-keeping-standard-time-is-undeniably-better-for-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">negatively impact your health</a>, disrupt how <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/5971932-not-everyone-supports-permanent-daylight-saving-time-heres-why/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">thousands practice their religion</a>, and have <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/transportation/5974752-airline-group-opposes-year-round-daylight-saving-time-why/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">"considerable implications" on your future flights</a>, at least temporarily.</p><p>The House already passed the Sunshine Protection Act of 2026, but the Senate is on recess until September. It's unclear, though, if the Senate will take up the legislation or <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/6027083-trump-urges-senate-daylight-savings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">if it has enough votes to pass</a> and make daylight saving time permanent.</p><p>Congress is also considering <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1630?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%22daylight+saving%22%7D&amp;s=3&amp;r=2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">two</a><a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/300?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%22daylight+saving%22%7D&amp;s=3&amp;r=4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">bills</a> in the House that would give states the option to observe year-round daylight saving time, as well as a bill to <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/nexstar_media_wire/5742250-half-daylight-saving-time-could-become-permanent-under-new-bill/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">make half-daylight saving time permanent</a>, and a bill to <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/5965517-standard-time-could-become-permanent-in-us-under-new-bill-with-some-exceptions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">make standard time permanent</a>, with exceptions.</p><em>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. But what about landscaping?</p><p>More groundskeepers and landscapers have been dying on the job, according to a <a href="https://www.moneygeek.com/insurance/life/most-dangerous-jobs-in-america/#the-rankings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">MoneyGeek analysis</a> of federal labor data. The occupation's fatal injury rate went from 13 per 100,000 workers in 2014 to 21 per 100,000 in 2024. </p><p>The steady increase has made it one of the 10 most dangerous jobs in America, MoneyGeek found, a few points behind trucking and construction. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 239 grounds maintenance workers were killed by work injuries in 2024. </p><p>In a <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2008-144/pdfs/2008-144.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">work safety fact sheet</a> from 2008, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health said there were most commonly using tools or machinery to trim or cut down trees when they were killed. Operating a vehicle or piece of transportation equipment was another common activity that led to a fatal injury. </p><a href="https://thehill.com/business/personal-finance/6032428-want-to-live-comfortably-in-your-state-how-much-you-have-to-earn-per-a-new-study/" class="promo-link__link" target="&quot;_blank&quot;" rel="nofollow"> Want to ‘live comfortably’ in your state? Almost 76 million Americans collect benefits from the safety net right now. At least three million more will become eligible for the program each year for the next ten years. This morning, we revisit the race for Iowa's 1st Congressional District seat. History tells us it should be close.</p><p>Republican incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks seeks a fourth term in office. She faces Democrat Christina Bohannan for the third time in a row. Miller-Meeks won the race two years ago by a narrow margin of 799 votes. There is also independent candidate Michael Bridgford on the ballot. We will get to know the independent candidate Michael Bridgford a little better this morning.</p><p>He was born and raised in Aledo, Illinois. Michael Bridgford moved to Bettendorf, Iowa five years ago. He got his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Illinois and earned his MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.</p><p>Michael Bridgford hasn't held elected office before. He's had a variety of jobs in finance. Among them, Bridgford was the managing partner for Cobalt Transport Services and later the director for Valley Wine Warehouse. He's currently a financial advisor with Bridgford Wealth Advisory, a small business he runs with his father.<br><br>Michael Bridgford is far behind in the money race in what will be an expensive campaign for the major party candidates. He has about $125,000, far behind the more than $5 million of Christina Bohannan and the more than $4.5 million dollars for Mariannette Miller-Meeks.</p><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=1GfwUn_1EUubbew00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=1GfwUn_1EUubbew00" width="1280" height="720" ><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">(OurQuadCities.com)</figcaption></figure><p>Bridgford has some support in polling. One conducted by The Bulfinch Group in the middle of July has him registering 11 percent among likely voters. Christina Bohannan is in front with 40 percent, and Miller-Meeks is at second at 35 percent.</p><p>It's not impossible for independent candidates to break through and win a seat in Congress. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is a good example. However, the odds are stacked against them. That clearly isn't stopping Bridgford from making that gamble Host Jim Niedelman got into the issues with Michael Bridgford.</p><p>"I believe we need a secure border. I think that's a policy that Republicans support. I think with the trade wars, we need to step away from those. I think that's a policy Democrats support," Bridgford said. After a one-time treatment consisting of 36 pills taken over the course of several hours, three of the 10 participants showed an increased tolerance for nuts when tested four months later, according to a <a href="https://www.childrenshospital.org/newsroom/media-archive/how-good-bacteria-fecal-transplants-reduce-peanut-allergy" rel="nofollow">press release. </a></p><p>In the second round, five participants were given antibiotics prior to the capsules to prevent their own natural gut bacteria from interfering with the results. In this round, researchers found that three of the five showed an increased tolerance to peanuts.</p><a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/health/flesh-eating-bacteria-survivor-ben-west/" class="promo-link__link" target="&quot;_blank&quot;" rel="nofollow"> After surviving flesh-eating bacteria, man prepares for next chapter </a><p>"Food allergies reflect a failure of oral tolerance, the process by which the gut immune system learns to accept food, and what this study shows is that the right bacteria can help restore that process," said director of translational immunology Talal Chatila, MD.</p><p>An estimated 33 million people have a food allergy, with nuts being amongst the most common. An estimated 4.6 million adults in the U.S. have nut allergies, according to the <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12341317/" rel="nofollow">National Library of Medicine </a></p><p>"People with food allergies want freedom from constant anxiety and extreme vigilance and to not have to be on guard for potentially dangerous exposures every time they leave the house," said Rachid. ‘Poop pills’ may be the key to a long-term cure for nut allergies: Study

Our new research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that the algorithms supplying your feeds may be prioritizing <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2610388123" rel="nofollow">content that clashes with your values</a>. That’s because the algorithms heavily weigh online posts that you reply to, and social media users tend to more often comment on content they take issue with than content they agree with.</p><p>Notably, our study of the X social media platform shows that although the <a href="https://github.com/xai-org/x-algorithm" rel="nofollow">X feed algorithm</a> promotes content to both Democratic and Republican users that contradicts their values, it does so more extensively for Democrats.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">How content gets into your feed</h2><p>Social media platforms use powerful algorithms that select posts to display in your feed from a vast pool of possible content.</p><p>On X, for example, posts appear on your screen as <a href="https://help.x.com/en/using-x/x-timeline" rel="nofollow">“For You” pages</a>. The algorithms predict the likelihood you will engage with the content – click a “like” icon or add a comment. Then they use the accuracy of those predictions to tailor what they serve you next time. Platforms use these interactions to learn their users’ tendencies.</p><p>But will the posts you receive reflect what you actually value? Some users care most about preserving traditions or keeping society safe. Others care more about free expression or protecting the natural world. Most people care about all of those things, to different extents. A feed aligned with a person’s values would reflect those varying priorities.</p><p>Psychologists use <a href="https://i2insights.org/2022/05/10/schwartz-theory-of-basic-values/" rel="nofollow">well-established surveys</a> to measure what a person values. To measure values expressed in the posts a platform selects for someone, we built <a href="https://doi.org/10.1609/icwsm.v20i1.42664" rel="nofollow">a measurement tool</a> that uses standard psychological classifications of human values. We then applied it to the feeds of 715 U.S.-based users on X.</p><p>We discovered that the X feed algorithm is most likely to amplify posts about upholding tradition, following rules or keeping society safe. And it is most likely to demote posts about looking after people, concern for people far away, being dependable or protecting nature.</p><p>When we compared these values against the values users had expressed in their own posts, we found the algorithm was more likely to promote posts that conflict with users’ values than posts that align.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why your feed may clash with your values</h2><p>Why did this trend occur? First, we checked whether users follow accounts that diverge from their values to begin with, but we determined that most accounts people follow do, in fact, align.</p><p>We also looked at whether people engage only with posts they disagree with, in which case the algorithm would just be serving up more of the same. But we found that people engage with plenty of posts that reflect values they agree with.</p><p>The catch has to do with the nature of the interactions. People primarily respond to content by “liking” it – clicking a “heart” button on X or a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook_like_button" rel="nofollow">“thumbs-up” button</a> on Facebook. Less frequently, people will write a reply, and when they do, we find that they often reply to posts that clash with their values.</p><p>Here is the smoking gun: The X algorithm treats those rare replies as a much weightier signal than the many likes. Essentially, it learns most strongly from replies. As a result, the algorithm tends to send a user “For You” posts that reflect the values of posts they’ve commented on – which tend to clash with their own values.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">Posts to Democrats are more objectionable</h2><p>Now the twist: We found that this algorithmic tendency is stronger on X for users who reported to be Democrats than those who reported to be Republicans. Our evidence indicates that this is because Democrats object more than Republicans to content they reply to. That creates a stronger feedback loop in which the algorithm more strongly presents clashing posts. The content the algorithm amplifies is more than <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2610388123" rel="nofollow">four times more misaligned for Democrats</a> than it is for Republicans.</p><p>So what comes next? In other research, we’ve hit upon one way for social media platforms to better align feeds with users’ values. We created a way for platform designers to ask users what they value and to <a href="https://doi.org/10.1145/3772318.3791281" rel="nofollow">then sort their feeds accordingly</a>. We found that users are quite good at distinguishing whether sample feeds sent to them align or do not align with their values.</p><p>Aligning feeds with values may open a possible door out of echo chambers in a way that unmediated exposure to the other side does not. Recent research from our team has shown that algorithms optimized for engagement – basically handing people the opposition and leaving them to sort it out – may even be <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.adu5584" rel="nofollow">responsible for more polarization, not less</a>. Surfacing bridging content that spans political lines while speaking to what the user values could be a promising direction for fostering both user autonomy and constructive conversation.</p><p>Ideally, in our view, the people who use a social media platform should have a greater say in the kinds of information shown to them. If platform designers, the public and policymakers can create new tools that facilitate this goal, then perhaps platforms can better support the values and actions people care about.</p><em>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. Children will receive free coats, shoes, hats and gloves. Other features of the event will include free Happy Joe’s pizza, haircuts, hair styling, press-on nails, a DJ and other activities. Parents must be present with their children to receive items.</p><p>“It’s so diverse. We get all kinds of different people,” said Erwin King, founder of Soles For Children. “It shows that the community needs it and that makes me happy because we’re helping everybody.”</p><p>King said the need has grown as families face higher costs for everyday necessities.</p><p>“Even people who are making decent money are struggling right now,” King said. “Many people are turning to DoorDash, Uber, Amazon Flex … getting second jobs just to get by. It’s been a rough year and everybody has felt it.”</p><p>For families with several children, the cost of new coats and shoes can quickly add up.</p><p>“That’s a lot to afford, on top of bills and groceries. We’re definitely making a change and helping people out,” King said.</p><p>The nonprofit has a storage unit with supplies in sizes for children of all ages but continues to seek donations.</p><p>“I started collecting in January, but this year I’ve had a harder time getting coats and shoes,” King said. “With the cost of everything going up, I’ve been driving all over. I’ve hit every Walmart from here to Aledo. I go where the sales go.”</p><p>The giveaway has become a community-wide effort, with sponsors and volunteers continuing to support the event despite the challenging year.</p><p>“The community is getting involved, from neighbors, to doctors and lawyers.
