Rock Island deputy fire chief retires: ‘I go with a deep sense of pride’

Rock Island's deputy fire chief called it a career on Thursday. Greg Marty retired exactly 25 years after he joined the fire department.

His coworkers celebrated his 25 years of service with him. Marty worked as a paramedic, then moved up the ranks as a lieutenant, a captain, fire marshal and deputy chief. He became deputy fire chief two years ago.

Marty looks back on his career with a deep sense of pride. "I could never give back as much to this city as this department as much as it's given to me. It's truly been a dream come true to be a Rock Island firefighter for 25 years.

"I love every minute of it, even though it's time to go and it is time to move onto other things. I go with a deep sense of pride over what we accomplished here."

Marty hasn't indicated what he'll do next. He hinted that some exciting things "are coming pretty close."
