A historical marker honoring a prominent abolitionist who fought for his freedom was unveiled in Rock Island.

QC PastPort and Visit Quad Cities dedicated the destination that pays tribute to the legacy of Dred Scott, a slave brought to Rock Island to serve Dr. John Emerson at Fort Armstrong in 1833. Scott sued for his and his family's emancipation several times from Emerson's family before taking it to federal court in 1853. The Supreme Court ruled against Scott in 1857, which became known as the Dred Scott Decision. The case was one of the reasons Abraham Lincoln decided to run for president.

The marker is located on the Great River Trail east of Schwiebert Riverfront Park.
