Rock Island teen wins Illinois’ best bagger competition

An Illinois teen has won the title of best bagger in Illinois.

According to a release from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, Carlos Sabino, 17, won the the first Illinois Best Bagger Competition at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Sabino works at Hy-Vee in Rock Island and won a $500 prize. Shelby Morton from Hy-Vee in Galesburg won second place and a $250 prize, and Mike Clark from Hy-Vee in Moline won third place and a $100 prize.

Contestants were judged on the speed of bagging commonly purchased grocery items, proper bag-building technique, weight distribution in the bags, as well as style, attitude and professional demeanor. Groceries for the competition were generously provided by Hy-Vee.

“Congratulations to Carlos, who will forever have ‘bagging rights’ as the champion of the state’s first Best Bagger Competition, Rob Karr, president and CEO of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association said. “Grocery stores are vital to our communities, and we’re proud to spotlight their contributions.”

Sabino will advance to the National Grocers Association Best Bagger Championship in Las Vegas for a chance to win $10,000.

A Salmonella Recall Now Reaches Walmart, Target, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods

A widening food recall connected to a multistate Salmonella outbreak now covers dips, salsas, guacamole and prepared meals sold by some of America's largest grocery chains. Taylor Fresh Foods announced the voluntary recall on Aug. 9 after learning that jalapeno supplier Coast Citrus Distributors was recalling peppers because of possible Salmonella contamination. The affected jalapenos came from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, identified as the likely source of an ongoing outbreak.
