About 10 p.m. Friday, police and other emergency responders remained at the scene of a partial collapse of a Rock Island church spire.

About 7 p.m., police, firefighters and public-works employees gathered at 5th Avenue and 20th Street at Grace City Church, where at least three parts of the church’s spire fell and scattered debris onto the street.

No one was inside when the spire broke, and no injuries were reported at the scene. At 10 p.m., crews were assessing the damage. Meanwhile, no one was allowed near the structure, and police shooed bystanders away.

Police blocked off the area starting at 19th Street to keep people from getting hurt in case anything fell off.

Our Quad Cities News crew saw one more piece fall shortly before 9:30 p.m.

At the time of the incident, strong winds blew throughout Rock Island.

This was the tallest spire in Rock Island, the Rev. Dwight Ford told Our Quad Cities News crew. Construction on the church began in the 1850s. Ford said the church seeks other venues for upcoming services.
