DES MOINES, Iowa — There will be more places to sit at the Iowa State Fair this year thanks to Geoffrey Grimes.

The Ankeny resident wants to be known as the “State Fair chair guy.” He learned how to build Adirondack chairs six years ago during COVID.

Since then, he started a business called Geoffrey’s Adirondacks. He sells his chairs online and often donates them to local causes.

His first customer at the fairgrounds was Bubbly, where you’ll find dozens of his chairs at the bar located at the top of the hill near Grandfather’s Barn.

Grimes said the best part for him is seeing people enjoy his hard work.

“I love it because I honestly genuinely love the Iowa State Fair,” Grimes said. “And I love just coming and seeing that people are sitting down and enjoying something that, in my garage, I built one by one. And that people are just sitting down and enjoying their favorite whatever food on a stick.”

This summer, eight more of Geoffrey’s Adirondack chairs will be in front of Josephine’s Glazed Donuts, which is located near the swine barn.

He hopes to have more of his chairs at the fairgrounds in the future.
