The Davenport City Council voted to take the next step to prevent trucks from hitting a low railroad bridge in the Village of East Davenport.

The plan involves getting money from the State of Iowa. City council approved applying for a traffic safety improvement grant for $68,000 from the Iowa Department of Transportation. The money would be used to install an over-height warning system on Kirkwood Blvd. near Mound St. The system would alert drivers of tall trucks as they approach the railroad bridge to prevent them from slamming into it

City engineers say they don’t have the authority to make any changes to the bridge themselves.
Twenty cases of trucks hitting the bridge have been documented over the last five years.
