Illinois’ ban on assault weapons upheld

An appeals court upheld Illinois’ ban on assault weapons.

The U.S. Court of Appeals ruled in a 2-1 decision to uphold the statewide ban passed in the months after the deadly July 4, 2022 parade shooting in Highland Park. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul called the move “a win that enhances public safety in Illinois.” The ruling comes just days after the Supreme Court of the United States said it would hear arguments in a case challenging Cook County’s ban on assault weapons.

Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke has promised to vigorously defend the law.
