QC woman heads to Auschwitz for 80th anniversary of liberation
By Gavin Waidelich,
2025-01-25Chris Green is a member of the Holocaust Education Committee of the Quad Cities, a group dedicated to teaching people about the history of the Holocaust. Green says her inspiration is Eva Kor, a holocaust survivor she met in 2013. Now, she is heading to Auschwitz 80 years after it was liberated.
“It represents the failure, really, of laws and cultures and communities when the everything of your government goes to the hating of especially one particular group, the Jewish people, but also anybody else.” said Green.
As a former teacher, green says she’s seen students curious about the holocaust, and she wants to find out more for them.
“It’s that interest from students and also the questions that come up about how could something like this happen,” said Green. “And we’re still there today, how could something like this have happened?”
“I love working with students and so I see it as an opportunity that I can share what I know, and also find out what they know,” said Green. “How we can use that to make our world a better place. Where we can be more inclusive, where we can be stronger in our ability to stand up when we see something that is wrong.”
Green plans to do more than learn, she’s also going to honor those who died.
“I’ve received some names of relatives of people in the two congregations here at Beit Shalom who lost their lives, and I’m intending to light a candle and say a prayer.”
