Bird’s mother is (or was) a poet who wrote poems about “missing hearts,” causing him to live only with his father, who is now a lowly librarian at the school where he was once a professor. When Bird receives a secret letter from his mother, he decides to try to find her. His best friend Sadie encourages him. The librarian takes him to the basement, where she opens hundreds of little drawers with cards and reads the titles to Bird.
