2024 AHSAA softball playoffs: Area tournament schedule, time, location
AHSAAsoftball area tournaments begin this weekend across all classifications. Area tournaments are hosted by the regular season area champion and will start Friday with all games completed by Monday. The winner and runner-up from each area will advance to regionals which begin on May 6. The state tournament is set for May 13-16 in Oxford.

Registrations Open for Hendrick Driven For Veterans Talladega Fundraiser
This Memorial Day weekend, racing fans will have an opportunity to wheel their own personal car around the Talladega Superspeedway as part of a fundraising event to support military veterans. Playing host is Hendrick Driven for Veterans, previously known as Vettes4Vets, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting those who served our country. The annual fundraiser event will take place May 25th, 2024, with all proceeds supporting various veteran causes.

Congratulations to this week’s Rising Star, Deonte Smoot!. Deonte is a senior at Winterboro High School with a 3.55 GPA. He is a member of National Beta Club, Varsity Football and Track, and a Peer Helper. In addition, he serves as an Upward Bound Ambassador helping the youth in the area. Ruffin, entomologist from Auburn who spent the day in Anniston this past week, farmers should become more “honey-minded.” No other permanent investment on the farm returns the initial cost every year, Ruffin says, as does the honey bee. At present there are approximately 1,000 farmers in Calhoun County with one or more hives, but the number should be increased many time — not only for the honey produced, but to insure adequate pollination for the plants that depend on insects.

Hackleburg shuts out Talladega
HACKLEBURG — Hackleburg High School shut out Talladega Central in a double header Friday, April 19, in the first round of playoffs. In the first game, Hackleburg won 10-0, Blaise Vickery struck out 12 batters and only allowed 2 hits in the win. JonHasten Stidham had 2 runs and 2 RBIs, Ross Hudson had 2 runs and Carson Swinney, JaQuan Reeder, Aydan Beard, Kross Weeks and Seth Ables had 1 run each. Beard also had an RBI.
