The parent of a cheerleader at Lexington’s Crawford Middle School has filed a lawsuit against Fayette County Public School officials saying the student was severely injured at a 2023 practice.

In the lawsuit filed April 18 in Fayette Circuit Court, Regina Martin alleges her daughter Rainie Martin was attending a cheerleading practice on October 17, 2023 supervised by coach Tamicha Brown.

Rainie was instructed to perform stunts with her group on a thin mat located on a stage at Crawford Middle School , according to the lawsuit.

“During the stunt another cheerleader in the stunt was in the air, came down, and Rainie caught her,” the lawsuit said. “During the catch, Rainie fell onto the floor where she was injured.”

“Due to the unsafe cheerleading conditions, Rainie Martin suffered severe injuries,” the lawsuit alleged.

“There is no comment on pending litigation,” district spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith said Friday.

The lawsuit said Brown’s breach of duty was a contributing factor to the severe injuries. The nature of the injuries were not described in the lawsuit. Martin’s attorneys did not immediately comment Friday.

The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages, medical expenses and future lost wages.
