Wildfire quietly grows to more than 5,000 acres in southwest Colorado
A fire that sparked in Colorado on May 14 has quietly grown to more than 5,000 acres over recent days. According to InciWeb, the Spruce Creek Fire has burned 5,699 acres roughly 11 miles northeast of Dolores at last report – up from a Thursday report of 4,962 acres being burned by the blaze. No evacuation orders have been issued at this time. The Town of Dolores is located in southwest Colorado, about 36 miles northwest of Durango. At last report, the fire was at 38 percent containment. Firefighters have been able to successfully use Forest Service Roads as firelines, with more than 170 personnel involved in fighting the blaze. Find additional information here. Spruce Creek Fire grows overnight
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Fire officials report that the Spruce Creek fire to has grown more than 1600 acres in size. The wildfire, burning on Haycamp Mesa 11 miles northeast of Dolores, started May 14 and initially consumed just 10 acres of Ponderosa pine forest. As of Thursday May 23rd, the fire, originally sparked by lighting, has covered 4,962 acres total. Over 179 firefighters and public safety officials have responded to the fire, which includes two hotshot crews and multiple fire engines from Wyoming and Montana.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Wind & Fire:. An air quality alert has been issued for the northwestern corner of the state. Cortez, Dolores, Telluride, Ouray, and Dove Creek are affected areas. This alert was issued at 6 p.m. yesterday and is in effect until 9 a.m. today. A wildfire just north of Cortez has brought heavy smoke to the region.
Turning cooler as rain exits
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Rain has exited our area. Now the cold front that brought the rain will bring a brief round of cooler air to Western Colorado. We got a healthy drink of water from that rain! Grand Junction measured a total of 0.21″, which started just before 11 PM Monday. Montrose got a later start but still managed to get 0.47″ of rain by the time it ended.

Spruce Creek Fire burning near Haycamp, Colorado
The Spruce Creek Fire took off on May 14 and is burning on the San Juan National Forest northeast of Dolores, Colorado. The fire’s inside a network of FS roads within an established RxFire burn unit. Two hotshot crews, two wildland fire modules, and an engine and crew are staffing the fire, along with a Type 3 incident management team.
