Mullets plans a new metro location with playful roadhouse charm
(This article was updated to note that the Norwalk location opened in June 2025.) Mullets — the playful, mullet-themed roadhouse with nostalgic sports memorabilia and a lively bar and grill feel — plans a new location in the Des Moines metro in the next year. In Waukee, a new location was announced at 1105 S.E. Pleasant View Drive along Grand Prairie Parkway in the new Kettlestone Peak development. What is Mullets? The original breakfast and lunch restaurant opened on the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers in June 2010 with views of downtown Des Moines and Principal Park. John Royer bought Mullets in 2016 from Des Moines restaurant operators Full Court Press and started franchising locations with the 2024 opening of Mullets in Ankeny. Mullets is best known for hearty, Iowa-style American breakfast and brunch, along with bar-and-grill staples. The menu includes classic breakfast plates such as biscuits and gravy, pancakes and omelets; signature comfort dishes like chicken and waffles, country fried steak breakfast and a variety of breakfast burritos; breakfast nachos, specialty hash brown plates and eggs Benedict; and sandwiches, po’boys, burgers and some pub-style fare. The restaurant is also known for its Bloody Marys and drink

Chick-fil-A is headed back to Iowa State's campus after 20-year absence
Iowa State University is preparing to bring Chick‑fil‑A back to the Memorial Union more than two decades after the popular chain left — this time as part of a 10‑year lease that would establish a second Ames site. Under the proposal approved Wednesday, Feb. 25, by the Iowa Board of Regents , Chick‑fil‑A would take over about 2,085 square feet on the union’s first floor. The store would be in the former MU Market & Café space near the food court, ISU Book Store, and Soults Family Visitor Center. The restaurant will join Panda Express and Sushi‑Do as the Union’s national brands. Sean Reeder, ISU’s senior vice president for operations and finance, told regents Wednesday the move responds directly to student demand . “Polling by dining and the Memorial Union found staff and students frequently ask for more national brands within our product offerings,” he said. “ Chick‑fil‑A is immensely popular with the student population, as well as faculty and staff.” Iowa State will contribute $750,000 toward infrastructure upgrades as part of the build‑out, while Chick‑fil‑A would cover the remaining improvement costs and handle maintenance, repairs and utilities. Ames Town & Gown Musicale returns with community talent, gourmet fare
The Ames Town and Gown Chamber Music Association is preparing for its long-running event for the senses. The 37th Musicale is set for 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. John’s by the Campus Episcopal Church, offering what artistic director Paula Forrest calls a musical celebration of friendship, romance and culinary delights. Forrest, who will retire as artistic director at the end of the season, said this year’s event continues the spirit that first inspired her to create the Musicale more than three decades ago. The annual program carries forward a tradition that started in 1990, when Forrest noticed the depth of talent across Ames and the Iowa State University community. The Musicale has become a well-known and highly anticipated gathering for audiences, known for its warm atmosphere and wide-ranging performances. More: Ames to host Norah O’Donnell book event thanks to longtime friendship “It showcases the really wonderful musical talent that we have right here in central Iowa,” Forrest said. “The feeling is a little lighter. The program consists of various musicians playing for no more than generally 10 minutes. It’s a real kind of collage with a lot of variety.” An Ames community tradition that continues to grow This
