Demolition underway where Wawa is scheduled to be built on S. 17th Street
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Demolition has begun in an area where a new convenience store is expected to be built. Crews are tearing down several buildings at the corner of South 17th Street and Wellington Avenue, site of the now former Samelin Center. Among the businesses that are gone, P.T.’s Grille, Tinyz Tavern and a Pizza Hut.

Several new businesses will soon open their doors in Leland, and more are on the way. Continued growth in the town means both residential and commercial development are booming. Perhaps the most prime example of the latter is the Leland Town Center development, which has seen practically constant construction in recent years.

Downtown Wilmington business owner fined for holding concerts without a permit
A downtown Wilmington business owner is vowing to continue a free weekly concert series despite drawing fines from the city of Wilmington. According to a copy of a civil citation, Joe Apkarian, owner of The Eagle's Dare bar and event space at 420 N. Third St., shared with the StarNews, his business was cited for holding "free outdoor concert(s)" May 17 and 31 without obtaining the proper permits. The citation notes that a $300 fine included $100 for the first offense and $200 for the second, with additional $200 fines "for every day that the property is in violation."

It’s known for its weekly concert series, but local laws are making it a struggle to sustain it because of fines. The owner said the show must go on.
Property cleared for upcoming Wawa on 17th Street
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – As of June 13, the property has been cleared for the Wawa set to be built at the corner of S. 17th Street and Wellington Avenue. The proposal for the Wawa was approved by the Wilmington City Council in May of 2023, and it will be on the property formerly occupied by an old Pizza Hut and a PT’s Olde Fashioned Grille.
Following rezoning, Brunswick amends land use plan to allow for mixed-use development
The rezoning of two parcels of land off U.S. 17 in Brunswick County could make way for a mixed-use development near Shallotte. A request to rezone the properties at 7611 and 7707 Ocean Highway West (U.S. 17) was approved by the Brunswick County Planning Board at its June 10 meeting. Together, the two parcels total around 138 acres.
New Hanover County searching for volunteers to deliver meals to older adults
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County is inviting the community to volunteer for the Senior Resource Center’s Home Delivered Meals Program. The program serves over 650 adults ages 60 and older who face food insecurity and isolation. The meals address their nutritional needs and let them say hi to the volunteers to fight off the isolation sometimes common among older adults.
