Chief Justin McIntire, Officer Sean Sluganski added to Borough and Township Memorial in South Park
SOUTH PARK, Pa. (KDKA) - Fallen Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire and Officer Sean Sluganski of the McKeesport Police Department were officially added to the Borough and Township Memorial in South Park on Friday.Chief McIntire was ambushed, shot and killed while pursuing a wanted suspect in January 2023. Officer Sluganski was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic call last year.The Borough and Township Police Association serves as a nonprofit organization comprising various law enforcement personnel from southwestern Pennsylvania.The organization "provides a forum for local police officers, state police officers, parole officers and agents from the District Attorney's office and state Attorney General's office to interact, educate and exchange information regarding their roles as law enforcement professionals," according to its website.Both men will be memorialized with their names added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial during a candlelight vigil along the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on May 13.
Celebration takes place for Frank Conrad's 150th birthday
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A birthday celebration was held at the historic Wilkinsburg Train Station on Saturday on what would've been the 150th birthday of Frank Conrad, the Pittsburgh engineer who developed the technology that would eventually help broadcast radio signals around the world.The celebration, put on by the National Museum of Broadcasting, featured priceless artifacts and memorabilia, a silent auction, and of course, a birthday cake.The transmitter Conrad built in the garage of his Wilkinsburg home would eventually be used to help launch KDKA Radio. "Our phones, the televisions we watch, the radios we listen to, our computers. All of that started with technology all from this genius. A Pittsburgh inventor right here," said Rosemary Martinelli, a board member of the National Museum of Broadcasting.The Frank Conrad Award for Broadcast and Electronic Media Innovation was also given out for the first time, with the inaugural award going to WQED-FM's Jim Cunningham.
Kiski Area youth wrestler earns spot on Team USA, inspires younger brother
Kiski Area’s Mario Hutcherson, 15, is headed to El Salvador to compete for Team USA at the Pan-American Wrestling Championships on June 11-16. Hutcherson earned his spot on the team by winning the U.S. Open in the 15U 75 kg division April 28 in Las Vegas.
