Kansas’ chances of a postseason berth took a significant hit when the Jayhawks let an eminently winnable game slip away on the road at TCU.

Now KU has little wiggle room with which to operate, as it sits at 3-5 heading into a home matchup with UCF, set for Saturday at 2:45 p.m. “We definitely want to make a bowl game,” cornerback Roman Pearson said. “We want to win every game from here on out. Kansas sophomore quarterback Isaiah Marshall is listed as probable, while last week’s starter, Cole Ballard, remains questionable for Saturday’s game against UCF, according to Thursday night’s Big 12 football injury report. Marshall — he missed last week’s loss to TCU because of a lower-leg injury — and Ballard (undisclosed injury) both were listed as questionable in Wednesday’s first injury report of the week. Third-string KU quarterback Chase Jenkins (undisclosed injury) also was upgraded from questionable to probable Thursday night. KU linebacker Bam Crouch and defensive back Syeed Gibbs are listed as questionable, while receiver/kick returner Bryson Hayes is doubtful. For UCF, quarterback Alonza Barnett III is listed as probable. Fellow quarterback Keyone Jenkins is out for the game. Kickoff will be 2:45 p.m. Saturday at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

Lawrence High’s Sports Regions Swap

Later this year, all Lawrence High School sports, with the exception of football, will switch from competing in the Eastern 6A KSHSAA region to the Western 6A region. These regions determine what schools LHS will have to face while attempting to reach state tournaments, with a switch to the West meaning that LHS will avoid having to face highly competitive schools like Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission, or Olathe: instead facing top Western schools like Washburn Rural, Manhattan, and Free State.

The Kansas Jayhawks will play host to Middle Tennessee at 8 p.m. Friday at Allen Fieldhouse in a one-time “guarantee game” that carries no contractual obligation for a return trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn. That is the modern norm for high-major men’s basketball programs facing mid-majors. It was not the case in 1999, when Roy Williams took the Jayhawks to the city 35 miles from Nashville as part of a three-year, 2-for-1 series. High-major programs routinely schedule teams such as MTSU for single nonconference contests. A road victory over a mid-major offers limited benefit in the NET rankings or strength-of-schedule metrics, while a loss in a hostile environment could carry significant downside.
