LANSING — Rapper Sean Kingston is headlining what could be the Lansing area's biggest 4/20 legal pot party in the parking lot of a Frandor business on Saturday.

Marijuana retailer Pure Options is sponsoring the free event for people 21 and over. Christopher York, vice president of marketing for Pure Options, said it could be the largest public weed consumption event ever in Lansing.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 127 N. Clippert St. There will be food trucks, glass blowers and vendors.

Kingston, whose hits include "Fire Burning" and "Beautiful Girls," which spent a month in 2007 as the #1 Billboard song, will perform in concert. York did not say when Kingston would perform.

While the Frandor event may be the biggest outward sign of pot's growing impact on the region, there are plenty of other giveaways and promotions planned five years after Michigan legalized recreational marijuana.

Handing out goodies on 4/20

Many marijuana shops will be offering sales and discounts on 4/20, which long has been considered a marijuana holiday. The legend is that a group of stoners would meet after school each day at 4:20 p.m. to smoke and the time became a code for meeting to light up.

Levels Cannabis, 5508 S. Cedar St., is offering a goodie bag worth $120 for customers who spend $100 along with discounts on a variety of products.

Pure Options, will have bars with the classic flower as well as concentrates known as dabs, along with food trucks, more performers and vendors for their celebration at the Frandor location.

JARS Cannabis, 6450 S. Cedar Street, is offering up to 40% discounts for 4/20.

LIV Cannabis Company, 6285 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., has deals including cheaper flower and concentrates as well as free gifts for people spending $100.

The Botanical Co., 3535 Capital City Blvd., is offering two ounces for $175 and a range of sales including edibles and disposable cartridges.

Skymint, with three local storefronts, will award one customer a free year of weed, drawn from entries of people who spend $75 or more.

What's a live consumption event?

Once local consumers have their goodie bags, they might be inclined to head over to the local live consumption event.

Michigan has issued 33 live event permits since 2020, with eight permits currently pending, said David Harns, a spokesperson for the Cannabis Regulatory Agency. Lansing had the state's third-ever licensed live event, the 420 Cannabis Festival, in 2021, and the area had three more events in 2022.

The Pure Options festival is the only currently active licensed event in the state. There's only been one live event, in March in Mt. Clemens, since early September.

The live events help to promote the stores as well as the community, and for Pure Options it was a chance to highlight other parts of the industry such as glass blowers, York said.

Officials: Don't drive high

Cannabis is legal in Michigan, but it can be dangerous and it is illegal to use the drug and drive.

Cannabis can slow reaction times, impair cognitive performance and make it harder for drivers to stay in their lanes, according to the National Highway Travel Safety Administration.

Drug-impaired driving was linked to more than 21% of the 1,053 fatal crashes in Michigan in 2022, and half of those drug-linked crashes were single vehicle crashes, according to data from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.

"Those who plan to use cannabis on 4/20 — or any day — should not drive," Katie Bower, the state department's director, said in a statement. "If you find yourself drug-impaired, find a sober ride home."
