Schmelzer, Davis and O’Rielley earn All-Ohio honors by OPSWA

COLUMBUS – The All-Ohio boys’ basketball teams were announced by a statewide media panel with three area players being named.

The teams were selected by members of the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

In Division II, Fairfield Union senior Caleb Schmelzer was named special mention All-Ohio, and Bloom-Carroll sophomore Carson Davis was named All-Ohio honorable mention. In Division IV, Fisher Catholic junior Hyde O’Rielley was selected special mention All-Ohio.

A year after averaging 15 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, helping lead the Falcons a 24-4 and regional final berth, Schmelzer raised his level of play this season by averaging 19.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

Schmelzer broke four school records this season with nine assists in a game, nine steals in a game, 48 steals in a season and 118 career steals. He also topped 1,000 career points this season. He scored 30 points or more three times this season, including a career-high 34 points in a sectional tournament win at Meigs. He also scored 31 points in a win against Watterson and 30 in a Mid-State League-Buckeye Division win over rival Teays Valley.

Schmelzer took home plenty of other postseason awards as he was selected as the Mid-State League-Buckeye Division Player of the Year for the second year in a row, was first team Division II All-Southeast District, first team District 11 Coaches Association.

He also was selected as the 2024 Eagle-Gazette Boys Basketball Player of the Year, marking the second consecutive year he has won the award.

Davis helped lead the way for the Bulldogs to capture a share of the Mid-State League-Buckeye Division championship after he averaged 15.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He was named first team All-MSL-Buckeye Division first team, first team District 11 Coaches Association and second team All-Central District.

O’Rielley, who helped lead the Irish to a Central District Division IV district championship, averaged 16.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He earned first team All-league, All-District and District 11 Coaches Association honors.
