Metzger announces they’ll be closing for good in December
It is with a heavy heart but much gratitude that after 12 years in Richmond’s Union Hill neighborhood, Metzger will be closing its doors on December 19th. I’m sure it’s no surprise to other small business owners, but this year has been the nail in the coffin for us after years of changes and hardships post Covid.

Richmond is on the front lines of the Sheetz-Wawa rivalry
The Richmond area is on the front lines of the great Sheetz vs. Wawa rivalry. Why it matters: Richmonders have strong feelings about gas station food and, therefore, chains. New data shows just how fierce the competition is in our backyard. State of play: The Pennsylvania-based convenience store giants have expanded their footprints across multiple states, but they share just 21 interstate exits, according to new data from road-trip app Pit Stop shared with Axios. Nearly half — 10 — are in Virginia, including eight along I-95 between Petersburg and Woodbridge, Pit Stop creator Jake Boyles tells Axios. And three of those shared exits are just south of Richmond, around Petersburg and Colonial Heights. What they're saying: "The rivalry's real DMZ starts basically at Richmond's back door," says Boyles. The Sheetz/Wawa divide around Richmond - mapped. Sheetz has just eight exits without Wawa, per an Axios analysis of Pit Stop's data. Wawa also has roughly 50 locations in the broader Richmond region, about twice as many as Sheetz , per an Axios review of

Richmond Fed: Central Virginia small businesses optimistic, but not all of them
Central Virginia’s small businesses are feeling optimistic. That’s according to recent research by the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, but not all have been so lucky. Manager John Murden opens the doors to Garnett's in the Fan on a sunny Thursday. The corner sandwich shop has a handful of tables, glass cases for freshly baked cakes and a cheap date night special. And the local favorite is celebrating a big milestone: 17 years in business this month.

VCU construction focuses on new builds despite concerns for its aging facilities
The ONE VCU Master Plan expands major construction projects while largely opting to decommission old buildings rather than repair. VCU uses the Six-Year Capital Plan, prioritizing capital projects with large-scale construction and substantial funding. Funding for maintenance is state-derived while construction project reserves are sourced from the state, university and public-private partnership, according to the plan’s website.
