Knox School Board to consider substitute teacher pay increase

The Knox Community School Board will meet Monday, November 9th, to consider increasing substitute teacher pay and to discuss several personnel and school business matters. According to the meeting agenda, the proposed increase would raise daily pay for substitute teachers with a high school diploma or GED from $85 to $100. Those with an associate degree or higher would see an increase from $95 to $110, while substitutes holding a teaching license or Premier Substitute designation would receive $120 per day, up from $105.

Career Academy responds after South Bend school board makes Clay High School vote

South Bend Community School Corporation board members voted Monday to appeal a judge’s decision that requires the district to make the former Clay High School building available to Career Academy through lease or purchase. Coach formally removed from John Adams football program; remains employed at SBCSC

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The head football coach at John Adams High School has been removed from his role with the team. The district announced it has completed its investigation into Frank Karczewski, who is also employed as a teacher in South Bend Community School Corporation. District officials say concerns were raised over photographs and messages purportedly associated with Karczewski. The district says it found "insufficient evidence" that he sent them to the students involved.

MENDON — Four local football teams are heading on to the next round of the MHSAA football playoffs. On Saturday, both Constantine and Mendon were able to pick up playoff victories at home in the opening round. Mendon to host regional final The top-ranked Mendon Hornets gave up nearly 60 points to Adrian Lenawee Christian in the regular season finale. As fate would have it, the two teams met up again in the opening regional round game for Division 8-player playoffs on Saturday. Mendon was a bit improved defensively. The Hornets scored on each of their first two offensive plays as well and ran away with a 54-7 victory over the Cougars. "I thought in the first half, we played exceptionally well. The first three quarters, we did an outstanding job," Mendon coach Bobby Kretschman said. "I was very pleased with the way we executed, especially after last week, where we gave up 57 points. With the sloppiness of last week's game, we went back to fundamentals and it showed." Now that the IHSAA girls basketball season has officially begun in the South Bend Tribune coverage area, let's take a look at some of the most high-profile regular season games across the area. Northridge, Penn and South Bend Saint Joseph notably have tough schedules, particularly in nonconference or tournament action. Here's 15 games or tournaments to look out for on 2026-27 girls basketball schedules around the area. Nov. 7: Penn vs. Valparaiso The Kingsmen and Vikings each won IHSAA 4A sectional championships with at least 23 wins before losing in regional championship games. They'll open up their seasons against one another at 7:30 p.m. ET in Mishawaka, and Valparaiso will be doing it without former Indiana All-Star Lillian Barnes, who is now at Ball State. Penn, however, returns nearly every key player, most notably sophomore Jillian Sanderson. Nov. 19-21: Culver Academies Thanksgiving Classic While only three area teams are competing in this tournament, it's notable because the potential for a 2025-26 IHSAA 3A sectional championship rematch awaits in Culver Academies vs. South Bend Saint Joseph. Penn, Northridge headline area prep girls basketball teams to watch

It's time, believe it or not, for yet another edition of Hoosier Hysteria on the girls' side. Indiana high school girls basketball teams began games on Nov. 2 after starting "official" practice back on Oct. 19. Teams will have their sights set on the ultimate prize in a trip to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the IHSAA state finals on Feb. 27, 2027. Sectionals are slated for Feb. 2-6, with regionals Feb. 13 and semi-states Feb. 20. More: Lily Scholl named 2025-26 Tribune Girls Basketball Player of the Year Bremen and Elkhart Christian Academy made it the furthest of any South Bend Tribune area teams a season ago. The Lions lost 66-57 to Oak Hill in Class 2A semi-state title game, while Eagles fell 55-33 to Fremont in a Class 1A semi-state title tilt. Bremen, though, graduated their top three players from a 24-3 squad. Northridge lost in the semi-state semifinal round to end last season. The Raiders knocked off Warsaw, whom they had lost to during the regular season, to win the sectional, beat Valparaiso to win the regional before a 76-59 loss to McCutcheon in a Class 4A semi-state game.
