Kingston’s Wall Street remains shadowed by vision of the 70s (GALLERY)
KINGSTON – Controversial since they were installed, the canopies, known as the “Pike Plan” that hangs over Wall Street businesses are still in place. The canopies were the vision of Woodstock architect John Pike and involved covering the sidewalks along Wall Street with a canopy, attached to the building facades. From the initial installation in the 1970s, the supporters and detractors of the plan were at odds. After years of no maintenance, the canopies were refurbished in 2011, resulting in the City of Kingston successfully suing the contractor for shoddy workmanship. The city recouped some of the money but the business owners were still stuck under a leaking canopy.
