Association of Black Judges of Michigan gathers at historic Idlewild for biennial retreat
A group of Black judges gathered this past weekend in Lake County in tribute to a pair of pioneers of their profession. Members of the Association of Black Judges of Michigan (ABJM) gathered at Idlewild from July 19 through July 21 for the Straker/Langster Judicial Education Retreat. Named in honor of D. Augustus Straker, Michigan’s first Black judge, and Percy J. Langster, Michigan’s and America’s first Black elected prosecutor, whose elected jurisdiction was Lake County, where the historic African-American community of Idlewild is located.
Folk Fridays concert series starts tomorrow
Lake County Historical Society presents FOLK FRIDAYS for the 5th season beginning with a concert this Friday. FOLK FRIDAYS will be presented this summer again by the Lake County Historical Society with an eclectic line up of nationally known folk musicians. All concerts will be held outdoors at the museum with seating in the parking lot, or you can remain in your cars which are parked around the seating area. The performances are free, open to everyone and suitable for all audiences.
Kids receive free fishing rods at Luther Library summer reading program event
LUTHER — Over two dozen Lake County kids went home with new fishing poles and tackle boxes Wednesday, July 17. The Luther Area Public Library hosted its weekly Summer Reading program. With the assistance of the Pine River Association, well over a dozen kids were taught how to fish.
