Youth is served
Life can be difficult for teens, particularly when exams come around. You may imagine libraries as places that increase the pressure — where (as the saying goes) you hit the books. The Wilkinson Public Library is more than books (both literal and downloadable). Its programs act as an escape...
Creede School Theatre earns awards at One-Act Competition
CREEDE - Creede School Theatre students, ranging in grades from kindergarten through high school, have received expertise in how to survive a “Zombie Apocalypse” and in doing so, earned several awards at the annual One-Act Competition at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center in Pueblo earlier this month.
Tired of fighting for a parking spot
No one alive today can imagine working the mines or the railroads in the San Juan Mountains, those worlds disappeared too long ago. You can’t even imagine my mother, in 1965, finding herself at Alberto’s Farm—where the airport is now—and thinking this was as close to her native Switzerland as she would ever find in America. She would forever have a dagger of guilt in her heart for being part of the transformation of the area, even though she never came even remotely close to building her dream cabin there.
From Rainbow, With Gratitude
In recent weeks, Rainbow Preschool faced some hard news that created painful and scary ripple effects throughout our community. Our organization has been so grateful for the support that Telluride and the surrounding community have shown. We have relied heavily on the Telluride Marshall’s Department, the San Miguel Resource Center, and Tri-County Health for their guidance and support. We are forever grateful for the outpouring of encouragement we continue to receive from families and individuals. On behalf of Rainbow Preschool and Daycare Center – which comprises the Rainbow, Rascals, and Rockies kids’ programs – thank you.
Lake City construction company facing thousands of dollars in extra costs due to closure of U.S. 50
A Lake City-based construction company can't start its first job of the season due to the bridge closure on U.S. 50 between Montrose and Gunnison. Coal Creek Construction's heavy equipment is stuck in Montrose. It was set to start work for the U.S. Forest Service in Crested Butte at the beginning of this month. The company says it would cost thousands of dollars to move its equipment using the I-70 detour. 74-year-old Mike Schell heads the small, family-owned and operated business. He has nearly four decades of experience in construction and dirt work. He wants to see the Lake City Cutoff open to commercial vehicles (in excess of 16,000 GVWR) doing business locally.
Last-second goal sends No. 4 Battle Mountain boys lacrosse to state semifinals
Tuesday’s 4A lacrosse state quarterfinal in Edwards was worth the price of admission: physical defense, back-and-forth offense, a last-second goal and a historic victory. “Man what an unbelievable game,” Battle Mountain head coach Pat Doherty said after Carter Shonk’s game-winner sent the Huskies to their first-ever boys lacrosse state semifinal. “First and foremost, I have to give all the credit to Telluride for fighting the way they did. What a game.”
Mountain Village announces Paul Wisor to step down
During the Town of Mountain Village’s annual directors’ retreat, town manager Paul Wisor informed staff that he intends to step down from his role in summer 2024. Wisor will resign to return full-time to the Vail Valley to be with his family. He is committed to remaining in his role through the end of July and possibly longer to ensure a smooth transition.
Out with the old next weekend
Spring cleaning will soon be underway in San Miguel County. The county’s largest cleanup event, which takes place in Telluride, Mountain Village and Norwood, is May 17-18. Town of Telluride Sustainability and Grant Administrator Darin Graber said the town’s zero waste goal is a priority for its residents.
Women call the shots
Summer movie season is upon us. For Telluride, it’s almost summer festival season, to be kicked off by the wonderful Mountainfilm Festival later this month. On Memorial Day weekend, from May 23-27, the town will be flooded with nature advocates and outdoor adventure film enthusiasts. One place they won’t be gathering? At the one single screen movie theater in town. The Nugget Theatre is closed indefinitely for renovations.
Head of Historic Preservation Department Jonna Wensel to retire
When Jonna Wensel first came to Telluride, she didn't. Diverted by the August monsoon mudslides of 2016 that closed Highway 145 from above Sawpit to the junction with Highway 62 near Placerville, she drove on to Norwood to spend the night. “I talked myself out of going to the job...
Former resident accepts plea deal in 2021 shooting
Former Telluride resident Brian Aitken, who shot another man in 2021, accepted a plea deal last Friday in court. Aitken pleaded no contest to prohibited use of a weapon, a class 2 misdemeanor, and will avoid jail. He was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation. The case, which has...
No child’s education should suffer
This has been a mantra of education advocates for decades and I agree wholeheartedly. In a RECENT Denver Post article, a representative from the Greeley School district articulated a premise behind this statement, “…the scientist who finds the cure to cancer could be a second-grade student learning English in Greeley.” This is very true; all students need the opportunity to grow to their full potential. But this representative also said, “…some may need to make sacrifices.” Now that is where I vehemently disagree.
