LADSON, S.C. (WCBD) – A fire department in Ladson offered a stark reminder Wednesday for drivers to obey roadblocks as firefighters respond to vehicle crashes.

It comes after one driver decided to go around a barrier while crews were working a multi-car crash on Treeland Drive during the morning rush hour, according to leaders with the Caromi Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire officials said the department and South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) had one travel lane closed going towards College Park Road so that first responders could safely work the scene. But fire officials said a person drove their pick-up truck past a fire engineer instructing vehicles to turn around.

The department’s lieutenant attempted to stop the driver; however, the truck increased its speed and “directed his vehicle towards the lieutenant,” fire officials said.

The lieutenant was able to move before he would have been struck.

Troopers from Highway Patrol went after the driver and issued them a citation. “While we are disappointed in the individual’s actions, further criminal charges will not be filed,” the department said.

Meanwhile, fire officials said the driver returned to the scene after receiving the citation, but instead of apologizing, the driver proceeded to harass first responders and threatened their jobs.

“We welcome the individual to bring what made up charges they think they are entitled to, and we would look forward to our day in court with you. As for our members involved, they are volunteer members who do not receive compensation for their duties,” the department said.

None of the first responders suffered an injury in the incident. Those who were involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries or were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Fire officials remind drivers to have multiple alternative routes available for their everyday travel and to prepare for the trip with traffic reports and maps that will route them around an accident.

“No one is above the law, and we hope this very common occurrence doesn’t happen again,” the department added.
