LABETTE COUNTY FAIR RODEO
The Labette County Fair rodeo took place on Tuesday and Wednesday at the arena at the Labette County Fairgrounds in Oswego. On Wednesday, Scout Cutsinger (above) wrestled this steer. Cutsinger is on the Northwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo team. He is from Claremore, Oklahoma.
Area Fairs Continue
Several area County fairs are in full swing this week. In Sedan, the Chautauqua County Fair is underway, and at 5:30 tonight there will be a free BBQ and bean feed. Table service will be provided and donations are appreciated. The talent show will also be tonight at 6:30. The rodeo also starts tonight, with a full lineup of events including bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding and steer wrestling to name a few. 4-H Events today include the swine show today at 8 a.m., rabbit and poultry show at 11, bucket calf show at 6 p.m. and the beef show at 7.

Former Parsons man pleads guilty to KCK murder
A former Parsons man pleaded guilty on July 15 to murder in the second degree in Kansas City, Kansas. He was to face a jury trial on the charge starting this week. He also is charged with attempted murder in Labette County for shooting a man in Parsons in March 2022.
A Parsons man charged with murder, attempted murder
A Parsons man made his first court appearance Monday on three felony charges, including first degree murder. Michael C. Morales, 48, 2314 Appleton, is charged in Labette County District Court with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder and interference with a law officer. The murder charge could lead to life in prison upon conviction.
Labette County Fair Starts Tomorrow
The Labette County Fair starts this weekend in Oswego. Starting tomorrow, the horse show performance will kick things off at 8 a.m. On Sunday, the dog show takes place at 11 a.m. followed by the pony pull at 2 p.m. Events will take place all next week as the fair will continue through next Saturday. Some additional highlights include the rodeo on Tuesday and Wednesday night, Bull riding on Friday and the demo derby on Saturday. All events take place at the Labette County Fairgrounds in Oswego, and coming up on Tuesday, we'll have fair organizers on for a preview of events during Open Line at 9:10 a.m.

Parsons duo finishes second at TSA nationals
Parsons High School TSA members Samuel Brewer, Noah McIntosh, Conner Barcus, Lucas Fugate and Antonio Aita hold the American Cancer Society Purple Level Award they received at the TSA national conference for their service project to raise money for the ACS in Labette County.
Altamont Fire Chief Resigns
The Altamont fire chief resigns. In a letter to Labette County commissioners, Altamont Fire Chief Bryson Shaffer says after the zoning decision at last Monday's commission meeting he has come to the realization that his efforts are no longer needed, and he feels like his voice is no longer heard. At the July 8th meeting the Labette County Commission voted 2-1 to adopt county-wide zoning regulations. Shaffer says he was a fourth-generation fire chief for Altamont and has spent over 25 years with the department.
Area High School Shooting Sports Teams to Compete
Shooting sports teams from several area high schools will be competing next week at the 2024 USA High School Clay Target League National Championship. Teams from Cedarvale-Dexter High School and Labette County High School will compete in Mason Michigan, starting next Wednesday. The competition features 3,000 competitors from across the U.S. competing in clay target shooting in both team and individual events. The final round of competition with award the top ten male and top ten female athletes as well as the top five teams in the country.
