LA GRANDE – (Release from La Grande Parks and Recreation) The City of La Grande is accepting nominations for the spring beautification award. The La Grande Community Landscape and Forestry Commission recognizes efforts to maintain and improve the beauty of La Grande’s environment through exemplary and outstanding landscape maintenance and design. Seasonal awards are given to residential and commercial properties that have been carefully landscaped and attract the viewer.
Personal-use firewood permits now available in Union County
LA GRANDE — The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest as of May 1 is offering free personal-use firewood permits, with a limit of 10 cords per household per year. Permits are available over the counter at local Forest Service offices. Calling ahead is recommended to confirm permit availability, as it can vary depending on the district, the availability of wood and the type of permit.
Kids Night Out gives parents the night off
LA GRANDE — Kids Night Out will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Quinn Coliseum on the Eastern Oregon University campus in La Grande. Sponsored by the EOU women’s basketball team, the event is open to children in kindergarten through sixth grade and features activities such as basketball, badminton, scooter bowling, bingo, board games, movies and dancing.

The first-annual “Fill the Combat Boot” event was held in La Grande, Pendleton, Hermiston and Umatilla. La Grande School District looking into student tracking system for buses
LA GRANDE – During the April 11th School board meeting, the La Grande School District examined current and future upgrades to its bus fleet. In addition to recently updated camera and radio systems, replacing the previous 20-year-old systems, the board discussed installing new student tracking systems for the district’s buses in the future. In the new system, students will sign into the buses when boarding, allowing the district to keep track of which students are on which bus. As explained by Superintendent Geroge Mendoza:
