Proposed Union budget would be 10% higher than current budget
UNION — The city of Union’s budget horizon looks bright. The city’s budget committee was presented with a proposed total 2024-25 budget of $8.564 million on Tuesday, April 23, one 10% higher than its current year’s total budget. The proposed spending plan would allow the city to maintain all of its programs and staff.
Blue Mountains Forest Plan Revision announces public meeting venue change for La Grande, April 25
LA GRANDE – (Release from the U.S. Forest Service) The Malheur, Umatilla, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests (Blue Mountains) continue to host public meetings that bring awareness and provide an opportunity for the public to engage in the Forest Plan Revision process. Public participation will help the Forest Service to gain local knowledge about existing forest conditions, understand community concerns and resource impacts. To allow for robust in-person public engagement, the Blue Mountains National Forests are announcing a venue change for the La Grande, OR public meeting on April 25.

Restored stained glass windows return to Union
UNION — A portion of Union’s past, after a long journey, is back. Seven stained glass windows that decorated the old Union Methodist Church for more than 100 years, were returned on Tuesday, April 16, after being repaired in Centennial, Colorado, over the course of seven months. The windows, which had long conveyed biblical messages not with words but with the light they captured, were reinstalled on April 17 by a crew from Scottish Stained Glass of Centennial.

Loads of Laundry program now offering expanded hours
LA GRANDE — A program helping the unhoused in La Grande to do their laundry is expanding to provide time for the less fortunate to clean their clothes at no cost. The Loads of Laundry program, which provides free vouchers for laundry services for unhoused people, is now operating at Sudz It Up, 2001 Adams Ave., La Grande, after relocating from another laundromat in town. At Sudz It Up those with Loads of Laundry vouchers can wash and dry their clothes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
