As rabies cases continue to surge, person in Warwick treated

The Rhode Island Department of Health is again alerting the public about the state's high rate of rabies after a person in Warwick was exposed by a raccoon. The encounter happened in the Payton Avenue area, and the person started rabies treatment Sunday, Nov. 1, according to the health department. The raccoon was not captured, so it could not be tested for rabies, but raccoons are common carriers of rabies, the health department said in a press release. Rabies is a fatal disease if it is not treated before symptoms start. The health department advises anyone who may have had direct contact with a raccoon in the area to immediately call the department's Center for Acute Infectious Disease Epidemiology at 401-222-2577 (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 401-276-8046 after hours) so a nurse can assess your exposure and determine if you should receive treatment. Are pets at risk as well? "If you think your pet may have come in contact with one of these raccoons, call RIDOH, your local Animal Control Officer, and your pet's veterinarian," the health department said. "Rhode Island continues to see a significantly elevated number of rabid animals in 2026," the health department

New Bedford's Sunbeam Bread building clears hurdle for 37 apartments

NEW BEDFORD – A plan to convert the former Sunbeam Bread building’s second and third floors into 37 apartments has cleared a permitting hurdle. The sprawling property at 229-241 Coffin Ave. won Zoning Board of Appeals approval to make the change from storage space to apartments on Oct. 15. The bakery closed in 2005. The property’s first floor will continue to be used for commercial/retail. The proposal required a ZBA special permit determination that the benefit to the city and the neighborhood outweighs any adverse effects of the proposed use. The main benefit to the city is the housing provided , according to the owner/applicant. The initial plan included providing 16 parking spaces within a proposed interior garage area on the first floor. Developers added another 12 spots to the plan to bring the total to 28. Question 7: New Bedford, Fairhaven officials say ballot measure helps housing crisis What's next for the proposal The required number of parking spaces is 37, so the applicant/owner will be seeking a special permit from the Planning Board to allow the lesser number. There are 23 spaces already approved for the first-story commercial portion of the building. The owner/applicant is currently conducting a

Rep. Carole Fiola wins reelection to state House. Full results

State Rep. Carole Fiola , a Democrat who has represented parts of Fall River and Freetown in the State House since 2013, won reelection on Tuesday night with 6,833 votes, according to unofficial numbers. Robert Anctil , her Republican challenger, finished with 4,588 votes. Fiola will continue representing the 6th Bristol district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Her district includes most of Fall River’s North End and the Assonet section of Freetown. Fiola had strong support in Fall River, where she garnered 6,165 votes to Anctil's 3,896 -- a 61% to 38% margin. In Freetown, however, Fiola lost to Anctil, 668 to 692 votes. Before her election to the House, Fiola served on the Governor’s Council for a decade and worked several marketing and economic development jobs in Fall River. Anctil, a former Berkley selectman, was part of a wave of GOP challengers in reliably blue districts in Greater Fall River this year, motivated in part by recent Republican successes in the region. Contacted on Tuesday night after results were available, Anctil said he had no comment. What's next for Fiola During her campaign, Fiola stressed her accessibility to constituents and her tenacity in winning funds for her district.
