KING — Retired football coach and camp director David Diamont hosted the Second Annual Foothills Youth Football Offensive Skill Camp at West Stokes on Sunday, April 14. Eighty-seven campers filled the Wildcats’ practice field with area coaches helping with the camp.

A special thanks to Coaches Jackson Smith (North Surry), Wes Evans (Surry Central), Chris Nelson (West Stokes), Tanner Haynes (South Stokes), Steve Whitt (West Stokes), Jamie Fortner (North Stokes) and Davey Diamont (Burns) for their help and expertise.

Last year the camp totaled 54 athletes, but it only hosted lineman and no skill positions.

This year’s camp featured fourth through graders with groups broken up into age and size. The lineman concentrate on fundamentals that included stance, steps, hand placement, explosiveness, double teams, trapping, pulling, and pass protection. The running backs were taught the fundamentals of ball security (handoffs), catching, throwing a football, basic passing routes, and running back agility drills.

The goal of the camp is to give as much positive instruction in order for the kids to get better.
