OSAWATOMIE – Mothers and their daughters gathered for the annual Mother-Daughter Tea Party at the Osawatomie Senior Center. The celebration of mothers, a week before Mother’s Day, featured mothers, daughters, granddaughters and even great-granddaughters on Sunday, May 5.
Trojan Elementary put on modified lockdown
OSAWATOMIE – The parent of a Trojan Elementary student suffered a mental crisis Tuesday, May 7, which led to the Osawatomie school being placed on a modified lockdown. Osawatomie Police Chief David Stuteville said in a news release that the parent in crisis lives in Ottawa, but the parent made statements about wanting to go to Trojan Elementary to see his child, which prompted the modified lockdown.

OSAWATOMIE — Osawatomie High School seniors received scholarships totaling $256,346 during the 25th annual Frank Elliott Scholarship Awards Banquet. The banquet took place Monday, April 29, inside the OHS auditorium.
Sheriff’s office investigating damaged mailboxes near Fontana
FONTANA – Miami County Sheriff’s Office detectives are asking residents in the Fontana area to check and see if their mailboxes are damaged. In the overnight hours of Saturday, May 4, into Sunday, May 5, deputies were called to Fontana in response to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

Sixteen Catholic Sisters have arrived at their new convent in rural Bourbon County from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The name of the compound is the St. Joseph Convent. “Our convent (the house in which Sisters live) was too small and we were unable to find either an available building or land in the area,” said Mother Maria Regina. ” We desired to live in a more rural setting, and the opportunity to settle (near) Redfield, Kansas, was an answer to our prayers for a good location for a larger convent.”

Lightning strike destroys Fontana grain elevator Thursday morning
MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. (KCTV) - A grain elevator in Fontana, Kansas, caught fire on Thursday after it was struck by lightning. The Paola Fire Department reported the grain elevator in the area of Dorman Avenue and Stephen Street was destroyed in the morning hours. No injuries were reported.
